Hey, Wrongplanet.

So, most of you probably won't remember me, but... I may have said some of this in the past.

I used to be a cutter. I didn't cut much. But I did, and it was addicting. But I'm convinced I've managed to stop.

Now that I've stopped, however, I'm taking my anger out by striking my wrists against things - tables, walls, etc. Technically self-harming.

I actually do have some calming methods, but they consist of running my nails, a thin piece of metal or plasic, or something similar along my arms very gently - stimulating the nerve endings, basically.

Does anyone else have calming methods that are... more socially acceptable? And don't have to do with cutting?

Thank you!

I would do a sport, but I'm not very good at many. But I do like swimming and horseback riding.

And I've actually tried knitting before - maybe I'll re-learn.

Thanks!

Also, not to be rude, but I was looking for activities to do right that moment, whether in school or at home. But still, I appreciate your tips. Smile

Buy a punching bag and hang it up
somewhere, then you beat the hell
out of it to get some release.

I`m familiar with cutting, what happens is
that by cutting the flesh you make the brain
release chemicals that have a "quiet down"
effect. So its not the cutting itself, its the
effect you get from it, and that effect can
be achieved many ways without harming
oneself. I do boxing for example, very
effective, useful to know as selfdefense
and good training. And feel free to use
whatever you want, knees, elbows, fists,
just get it out and then take a shower and
get some food - you`ll feel alot better

edit--
watch those wrists, use glows/tape them
up in the beginning, or not - depends on
what you can take. And if some guy really
gets to you, tape his pic on the bag and
show him how you feel Smile

Yes, i belive that to be true. If you get shot for example, the body
quickly releases chemicals to calm you down and handle the pain.
I am very sure that many cutters cut themself in stressful moments
to achiveve that "quiet down" effect, i have felt it myself. And it can
become a habbit when you know its so easily achieved and you dont
know that its a chemical reaction that can be achieved in other less
painful and scaring ways. I notived when younger that i calmed down
after putting my fist through someting and hurt it, so i turned to boxing,
but there are many options.

You need a tip jar for tips.

No, seriously. I use humour to deflect all my problems. Yea, shrinks have a field day with me, but cracking a joke is often the quickest way to get a problem off your mind.

As is watching Springer... one of the few good things my grandma taught me. If you see someone else having a crappy day, you're less inclined to think lowly of your own.

Try chewing on things as well. I know it's often labled as a nerve thing, but I find chewing the everloving crap out of a pen to be quite satisfying.

Find something small like a tiny rock or grain of sand or a splinter of wood and roll it between the tip of your thumb and the tip of your finger. I do this all day long, and I don't think anybody has noticed me doing it yet.

I have a 'lucky' rock, about the size of a grape that I use. Perhaps you could put lotion on your arms. I envy women that they can do this in public, but if I did everyone would wonder if I was contagious !!!
