ive posted before as basically my son has a tic. He is throat clearing and spitting snot (I know its gross sorry) Ive ignored it all though the summer holidays but since 2 wks before he goes back to mainstream school i have been saying that he must try thinking about this noise his throat wants to make as children may call him bad names. He is 6 and Im not sure if I should ignore but im terrified of him getting bullied and teased, what would other peoples opinions be from experience, thanks.

I just wanted to add that its not a normal throat clearing noise, its loud and not what people would expect if you know what I mean

I can sympathize with you on this. My son (nearly 9-year old HFA) has a really loud throat clearing tic he's had since he was about 6. He doesn't do the spitting, but the throat clearing tic has been a problem for him at school. He's had teachers, especially substitutes, send notes home about his distracting noises. Now that people have gotten used to him and the tic it seems to be less of a problem. I don't know if it's caused any problems with teasing because he doesn't seem to clue in on teasing much yet unless it gets really obvious.

Maybe just work on the spitting part and allow him the noise if he needs it. My son's neuropsych speculated that this was not an actual tic in the classic sense, but rather a stereotypy, or self-stemming action.

Good luck with this. It's hard, because I know the more we draw attention to my son's "noise" the worse it can get.

Might not be a tic. It could be allergies or a response to something he's breathing. I used to cough constantly and I was teased for it in high school. I also stank, because of cigarette smoke from my parents and wood burning. As an adult, I am not around that anymore and I don't cough nearly as much. Go figure. This is why I won't marry someone who smokes, because I don't want to go back to that. To me, smoking is worse than farting and BO combined!

I understand your feelings about this. My son has little quirks off and on that I've wanted to curtail for fear that he will be teased or ostracized by kids at school. The most obvious one was when he would scrunch his nose up. It was like a facial tic, and I often wondered if it was the beginnings of Tourette's syndrome. It ended up that it was merely his response to his nose tickling him when his allergies were particularly bad.

This cough could be due to allergies -- or it may just be an odd habit. I didn't have much success getting my son to stop the facial tic, and eventually, he has grown out of it.

There's always something going on with our children, right?

I know how hard it must be to worry about our kids getting teased...I homeschool my son because I could no longer tolerate it...

I will tell you a cute story...When I was in 4th grade, there was a boy in special ed class (I was in it for only a couple of days I think...they couldn't figure out what to do with me), anyway, he spit in his hand and did something similar to what you describe...believe it or not, I was SOOOOO in love with this kid...hehe...So, although some might harrass him, there might be some (like me) who won't care...
