So since there are quite a few Genesis/Collins/Gabriel fans out there on WP, I thought a thread for 'em was appropriate. Favorite songs, youtubes, trivia, favorite LP, whatever...let's talk!
I'll start off with mine:
Favorite Genesis songs: The Brazilian, and No Son of Mine. Oh, and The Firth of Forth. <---Firth of Forth? My bad, Firth of Fifth. Heh. (Edit)
Favorite Collins solo songs: In the Air Tonight (all-time favorite) and Easy Lover.
Favorite Gabriel solo song: Solsbury Hill.
Interesting article about "In the Air Tonight" that gave me a chuckle in the first paragraph, cuz it is so true (I am guilty of doing just this): http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_phil_collins_air/
And I absolutely cannot wait to get my paws on Tony Banks' solo cd. It sounds awesome from what I've heard. I so sense another musical obsession coming on... _________________ There are only 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

I remember Mike Rutherford's offshoot band, Mike & the Mechanics-and that one song that sounded like it should've been movie theme because of how much of a "story" narrative it had, "Silent Running" (Can you hear me calling you).
Was really into Peter Gabriel in the late 80's-early 90's, but not while he was with Genesis (I know, that makes me a blasphemer in the annals of fandom-oh well). Solo (or non-Genesis) work:
"Exposure" with Fripp-super exciting to listen to, the monotone of male voice contrasted with extended female shrieks (not the sort of thing I usually go for at all !) is unparalled wonder.
"Wallflower" is really heavy, emotionally (though I don't know what it's about). "Lay Your Hands on Me" is powerfully thrumming alternating with understated quiet passages, too.
His "Plays Live" album had ton of great stuff on it, too. "The Rhythm of the Heat", "I Have the Touch", "The Family and the Fishing Net", "I Can't Remember", et al.
"So" album: duet with Laurie Anderson (I like some of her stuff, too) "Excellent Birds". "Hear that Voice Again" & "Mercy Street" were my favorites, esp. since they didn't get much airplay.
Then there's his film soundtrack for Scorcese's "Passion of the Christ"-now that is some incredibly excellent material, I love it.
Collins/Genesis:
I often forget which tracks are solo vs. with the group, sorry about that.
"Mama" is kinda' scary (the "heh-heh-heh" refrain) but also funky coolness.
"Illegal Alien" is catchy & clever, too.
"Home by the Sea" & "Second Home by the Sea" are swirling epics I dig.
"That's All" and "Throwing it all Away" remain sentimental (and musical) favorites of mine.
"In the Air Tonight" was so dramatic that I always liked it, esp. as kid, wondering what it was supposed to be about. Then later (read or saw interview with him) found out it wasn't really about anything, and that people were frequently coming up to him asking what it was referring to, and they expected some big story which he said wasn't the case, despite how it seemed.
"Invisible Touch" was so catchy, still is. Same with "Easy Lover", Collins' duet with Phillip Bailey (was he from Earth Wind & Fire or some such group ?). I didn't look this up, is from my selective memory of favorite songs from long ago-so if I've misnamed/misattributed, pardon.
Well, anyway, yeah-I could go on & on. _________________ *"You cannot administer a wicked law impartially-it destroys everyone it touches, its violators as well as its upholders."* |

Gabriel, IMO, was far better as a solo artist. "Mercy Street", "Sledgehammer", and "I can't remember" are some of my favs.
I started listening to early Genesis stuff this year, and blah. Selling England by the Pound, Gabriel's vocals were...well meh. I loved the instrumental bits, but the vocals (granted they were young and hadn't settled into their style) don't exactly vibe with the music.
"Invisible Touch" rules. Just 'cause I love the direction they were headed in with that album. And yeah, you're right about "Easy Lover", Bailey was from Earth Wind and Fire. _________________ There are only 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary and those who don't. |

Genesis - Trespass through The Lamb were all good. The later albums I find sort of spotty
Phil Collins - I like Brand X and his first solo album Face Value
Peter Gabriel - At his best I like him even more than Genesis in their heyday (the Melt album, So, Passion) |

I only like Gabriel-led Genesis. The pop albums they made in the late 70's and throughout the 80's and early '90's sound like a different band. _________________ "We can't stop here, this is bat country." - Hunter S. Thompson |

| On the contrary, I found their transition to being a pop band to be remarkably smooth. Each one was slightly more distant from the prog of Selling England until the s/t. |

I am a HUGE fan of Peter Gabriel!!!
I was THERE at the Secret World Live concert! And watched a young up and coming Paula Cole sing her lungs out.
The ringtone on my phone is 'Come Talk To Me!'
The man is a genius, he was the soul of Genesis.
Who else could release THREE self titled albums and nobody says boo? _________________ Voilą! Wasn't as fond of the whole album "US". "Digging in the Dirt" (one of the singles) was uneven-aspects of it were cool but other features were annoying.
However, my favorite tracks were "Secret World" and "Only Us"-I like those a lot !
Thanks for reminding me, so I could comment on these. Had forgotten about the subsequent recent work-was more into his (solo) stuff back when "SO" came out. However, as I mentioned, I still love his soundtrack for "Last Temptation of Christ". _________________ *"You cannot administer a wicked law impartially-it destroys everyone it touches, its violators as well as its upholders."* |

I only have the one Gabriel album but I like it. It's the one with 'Steam' and 'Come Talk to me' on it.
I stumbled across the Church of Peter Gabriel, it's worth a read...

...I like the Kate Bush duet and things like Solsbury Hill. Hate Sledgehammer and most of the other hits. |

I always felt that Steve Hackett leaving was the start of the "new" Genesis, and in all honesty I think they should have called themselves something else; I really didn't like what I was hearing, and it was not the same band IMO. Yes and Rush also changed to a more commercial sound at the end of the seventies but to my ears it didn't feel like they "sold out" in the way Genesis appeared to. However, I did like their first outing as a three-piece "Then There Were Three", and have to admit that Collin's vocal performances on the "Second's Out" live album of the Gabriel material is outstanding (his drumming is, of course, out of this world also).
As far as Gabriel is concerned, although he also turned to pop (art-rock?) after leaving, I always thought his output more classy and original than the Collins' beatsters, and it wasn't too embarassing to admit that you liked it (sorry to Phill's fans).
Incidentally, Hackett just went straight off continuing with the same stuff Genesis was known for, you should check him out if you liked the early Genesis material. |

I saw Genesis live on the Selling England tour and the Lamb Lies Down tour. I also saw Trick of the Tail. After that, I was done with Genesis. I blame Phil Collins for the death of good music. Music died when Gabriel left Genesis. _________________ http://iacmusic.com/larree |

I didn't find out about Genesis (other than a picture in Creme magazine...which was ages ago... until mid-70s. Liked the Gabriel stuff, though early Genesis was a bit sedate for me.
I liked the live albums; Genesis Live, Seconds out, 3 sides live (haven't found the ones with 'the short ones', and 'the long ones'). I do 3d rendering, and while a particularly long render was going, I'd fire up the CD and try to drum along (with real drums), to the Cage medley from '3 sides live'. Usually got left in the dust, but it did teach me some things about drumming.
I liked some of Gabriel's later stuff (I have 'Shaking the Tree', which is actually about all the Gabriel I need... a couple of Collin's works, and Genesis up to 'Calling all Stations'.
Actually, some cover bands do good work. I once saw the Musical Box do the '73 tour, and they were dead-$%#s on on everything. The long tirades before each song I could do without, but a fun evening. |

Yep, Musical Box are spot on; watching them feels like going back in time. I've seen them reproduce "Lamb" and "Selling England" and they are superb. It would be interesting to hear from someone who can compare Musical Box to the original shows. _________________ A man will come amongst you, and lo, he shall be known as Spotty... |
