I'd have to say that Watchmen comes first, and Maus second.

Watchmen, well, it's one of the deepest comics I've seen. If you had to argue that comics were another form of high literature, this tale about screwed-up 'superheroes' would be your best argument.

And Maus, well, it's a very good tale that tells a very personal story about the Holocaust using an unusual perspective: anthropomorphic animals. Grim and dark, but also not without its charm and its exposure of human nature.

What do you reckon?

Id agree with Watchmen, but I also think that the Sandman is Underrated.

Neil Gaiman? The only one of his Sandman mythos that I have read was one of his 'Death' books. I think it was The High Cost of Living...

Watchmen.

As far as Alan Moore goes, I'm a big fan of V for Vendetta and Promethea as well, but I think everyone else thought Promethea got too hung up on the magical stuff to be a good comic. I like it, anyway.

I also think Maus is a very, very powerful story, amazingly told. You cannot possibly ever read Maus and then say comics are for kids.

I say all this as a huge, huge Sandman fan, but I'm sure Neil would probably concur. Have met him, twice. Cool guy. In an interview in 1997, he also had what I think must be the final word on trying to make movies out of comics...
To make it film-shaped, it's like taking a baby and cutting off both of its arms and one of its legs and nose and trying to cram it in this little box, and filling the rest of the box up with meat. I don't think it works that way.

I would tend to agree, but I'll be interested to see this one anyway...

Watchmen is the correct answer. Maus is in second place, but that's not to say anything about that fantastic book.
