Okay so its 5am, and ive been up all night due to f*cking crickets, i use fan to block out many noises, and try to keep the air on all night for extra noise, even put music on to block out noise, i cant use ear plugs they bother my ears, can't use headphones at night they bother my ears, i cant have tv on or anything because if it has words or anything ill be awake, it has to be a constant noise like my fan and the air makes. My music doesnt work usually jsut keeps me from headbanging for alittle bit. I barely get sleep as it is, so sleep is soo crucial for me! I'm f*cking loosing it, i headbanged so hard i knocked myself out again, theres nothing else it seems i can do to block out noises. The house already has to have all tvs, all computers, everything has to be off, all lights even little ones like my smoke detector little light can keep me up, i get black out shades soon. Now though i'm so angry and upset, my sensory issues are f*cking horrible, i'm left wiping my bed off all the time because if lets just a piece of crumb gets in my bed i dont sleep, if my cat wakes up to switch postions i wake up, shes only 8lbs !
Does anybody know of any noise cancelling machines i can buy that have a constant noise, not music, not like ocean or weird humming calming noise, just a machine that makes lets say noise of a loud fan, a constant noise over and over that blocks out noises through out the house, please i'm so desperate, my doctor told me if i headbang anymore serious like i did tonight i might knock myself out for good and never wake up, my head injuries in the last couple months have been so severe that its been leaving me with constant dizzy spells, constant headaches, and constant huge bumps and bruises and i dont just headbang against soft stuff, i do it against walls, doors, floors, my pot i beat over my head so badly i loose feeling in my whole body, i took meat cleavers to my head, took hammers, my headbanging is serious, and i banged through helmets and ate soft helmets, and this headbanging is due to frustration , so please if anybody knows where i can get noise cancelling machines, it would help me soooo much, i dont care how much it costs either? _________________ Dxed Classic Autism(moderate to severe as a child, now moderate to high functioning as an adult) & Dxed Tourette Syndrome...

Ugh i wish, i have eye masks, but they bother me and keep me awake, and ear plugs bother me so much i end up taking my nails and scratchin skin off of skin on my ears, even shoved a knife in my ear once, didnt damage anything but i'm a huge self injury person, mainly because i dont sleep good due to damn sensory problems! _________________ Dxed Classic Autism(moderate to severe as a child, now moderate to high functioning as an adult) & Dxed Tourette Syndrome...

sensory problems, meaning i cant wear certian clothes, cant handle certian smells if i walk into a like a candle store i meltdown due to overstimulation, or fabric stores all the colors drive me nuts, i have hyper sensitivity to light, sound, touch, smell, taste, everything it sucks. My sensory problems are so bad, it affects how i sleep, live, walk, talk, eat, do anything! _________________ Dxed Classic Autism(moderate to severe as a child, now moderate to high functioning as an adult) & Dxed Tourette Syndrome...

There are noise-cancelling headphones. They take in the outside noise via a microphone and invert it. The outside noise and the inverted (heaphone-produced) noise reaches your ear at the same time and cancel eachother out = no or little sound survives.
Theoretically you can build a noise-cancelling environment in, for example, your bedroom. I haven't heard of companies producing them, so you might have to build it yourself or ask some skilled friend to help you.
A test would be if you buy a pair of moderately cheap noise-cancelling headphones to see if they work for you. Even if you're not comfortable with headphones, this will give you an idea of if it would be worth it.
Another possible solution for you could be to use White Noise to camouflage the background noises. White noise contains an even distribution of all frequencys over the spectrum. It is known to be relaxing and and to mask unwanted noises.
Here's how you do it:
Get Audacity (freeware) on the net.
Make a sound file with white noise and save it to your computer.
Burn the file to a CD or put it on your iPod.
Connect the iPod to your stereo equipment (or play the CD: the advantage of the iPod is you can repeat the track infinitely without gaps).
Do some fine-tuning to find the optimum volume level for you.
Whether you try this or find some other solution, I wish you the best of luck . I know myself how painful noise-sensitivity can be. I have become better in tolerating noises, but I'm still disturbed by noises from my neighbours etc. |

oh wow ur a genuis lool, i use noise cancelling headphones on a daily basis, but they dont work while sleeping, but to burn a white noise sound onto my ipod and put it on constantly play might help me a ton, thanks, im def going to look into that! _________________ Dxed Classic Autism(moderate to severe as a child, now moderate to high functioning as an adult) & Dxed Tourette Syndrome...

google: noise cancelling machine
gives you 338000 entries, some scientific articles too.

those things seem to be around 50.00 to 100.00
I've no experience with any of them, since white noise would drive me more crazy than any natural sound like birds, stormy wind or whatever. _________________ Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,

I did something similar before.. accept it was just a CD that was an hour long of white noise that was really quiet, sounded kind of like waves.. it was supposed to help put you to sleep.. it was called Abyss or something.. but yeah that was good. |

Good they give you some help You could acually build a noise canceling machine from such a pair of headphones: take the signal that goes to the little loudspeaker in the headphones and connect it to your stereo equipment. Technically, It's as simple as that. The rest is fine tuning. The microphone should be directed towards the noise and the stereo loudspeakers should be at the same distance from you as the microphone.
Lot of technical stuff...I've been thinking of this a lot myself so I thought I might as well share. Btw I've heard Bose makes the best noise-cancelling earphones. |
