I hear that the AFF forum has recently disintegrated over internal disputes, and consequently many of the former members there are beginning to migrate over here. Warm welcome to all interested here, whether you be Aspie or NT, and let's try to keep this site relatively peaceful. Though, if you want to have some senseless flame wars, you can always come and hang out with me in PPR (Politics, Philosophy, and Religions, for the blissful ignorant).

Who, me? I'm here to stay, at any rate. And I don't think we should turn away the people who don't have an online AS community after AFF imploded. They're fellow Aspies, are they not?
JakeWilson: From what I hear, internal power struggles between a posting clique and the site owners led to mass chaos and eventually collapse of the AFF forum.

I hope the good guys from AFF come here and have fun but the bad cliquish come here too knowing that they are going to have rules that won't be bent towards them.

I am not to sure what the problem was there, since I rarely went there, it didn't seem very friendly, zOMG seems way nicer.

There has been a lot of cliquiness and personal feuding for ages, as well as a mob mentality on some occasions. On top of all that there was a lot of paranoia regarding trolling. I think what happened is that one of the mods turned up the other day, saw the state her forum was in and started throwing out bans left, right and centre. Some people argued against the more unfair bans and got chucked out too. Now the forum's temporarily closed for posting and the banned users have formed a breakaway group.
Hopefully the site will pull through, but it's touch and go.
It's upsetting, because the AFF I joined was nothing like this. |

But that is not the truth though Planet Louise.
The owners of AFF decided to not be as involved but in leaving AFF pretty much to its own devices (Gareth was heavily involved in his litesim.com project and Amy was raising her baby) the forum membership basically had to run the place and chase off trolls and protect and look after the membership.
Now like anything there is going to be times when "the victim" has said something crass, sexist or nasty and others will jump on them. Now being that the people jumping on the are the more active posters and the more expressive, passionate, vocal and opinionated, they are likely to be backed by others in the community who think similarly. Friendships certainly were developed. There was a lot of really good stuff and good memories on the site.
Why Amy decided to do what she did is something only she knows but trying to call out "bad cliques" or "mobs" or whatever is pretty ignorant and not fair or nice.
If you listen to the people who left or were banned, you will hear of people that their forum and a second home to many in a two week period was wrecked and that the reasons for some of the de-moddings, bannings, deleted posts and whatever were either not expressed, badly expressed, irrational or without merit.
Yet here are you guys saying "Hey come to Wrongplanet, unless you are part of that separatist corrupting movement and therefore troublemakers. Kinda mean-spirited.
If you listen you will find plenty of "victims" who talk about bullied and high-handedness what you probably won't get a sense of from them is whether or not they were insulting. On whether they were nasty. On whether this "mob" was always in agreement, had a list of names, what kind of characteristics they had in common, whether they kept the forum buoyant, whether they had passion for the site and whether they were fair in what they said by and large.
Let me be even more frank. only 5 or 6 members were banned. Why did so many chose to join the new site? 10:1? If it was a bad clique and the troublemaker were thrown off - then wouldn't the rest of the members wipe their brow and say good riddance and desert these "horrible bullies";
Something to think about isn't it? Perhaps it is not all that it seems and inviting all people from AFF here yet insulting some of them for nothing more than ill-informed bigoted judgment is not the way to go. |

Quite a few current and former members of AFF have accounts on WP; many post quite regularly; so its not a matter of new people coming; most of us were already here.
And while its true the separatist group did have a falling out with the AFF admin they are not trouble makers.
What happened was unfortunate; but wasn’t solely the fault of those who were banned. |
