Well lets see. I haven't been on because I was busy for quite a while with Highschool- getting ready for college and moving... Well Now I am here and I am having trouble.
There are a lot of things in the city that I have never encountered. I need some serious advice. I might not go out until I get some.
First of all-
Everyone thinks I am a prostitute. Er... I wear long jeans all the time and long sleeve shirts and a hat because it makes my photophobia better- like a trick in my mind. Can someone tell me the differences between a prostitute and a girl walking down the street? I want to be the girl walking down the street... not... THE girl.. Well this isn't the important one- it just bothers me since I am so incredibly modest. I am not even pretty. blech.
The one that bothers me is that I encountered my first "Crazy homeless person" today and he was nice enough- obviously insane. I realized though that I don't know how to leave conversations with strangers that approach me. I ended up getting saved by some man who was like "Are you ready to go now? Honey." I took a moment but when I caught on we walked into McDonalds together. If it hadn't been for him I would have been there hours trying to smile and nod my head. I ended up standing there for forty-five minutes... smiling and nodding. I couldn't understand most of what he said because of background noises... But if anyone wants them for a laugh I could write down what I did catch. x.x
So that is what I need. I know I am prone to writing long, unnecessary things... Sorry.
So how do you properly leave a conversation with a stranger... I found out that they get mad when I just sort of walk away... But I don't know how else to leave. Gah. Maybe I should just stay inside.
There are lots of other things- but I am handling them pretty well for now. |

Well I lived in a seedy part of town for 14 years, the best thing for you to do, is look like you have some place to
be, prostitutes are only looking at cars going by. And be careful of strangers, even the helpful ones can be risky. |

OH.... I am not used to the car sounds and I turn and look every time they come by... I will have to practice that. That is probably the exact problem. Because the cars go (today since it is rainy) Whooosh splash clank clank (bridge) whoooosh. So I end up looking. No wonder everyone thinks I am a prostitute... I wonder if horse blinders and earmuffs would help me LOL.
And I will remember the part about strangers. Thankfully my mom gave me a gun and I have a permit/lisence thingy that says I can carry it for my own protection
Now I just need advice on the second ones. (And don't say shoot them because I know that is not allowed.) |

| I seemed to have the problem attracting the crazy's to, I learned to recognize them at a distance, then I would be able to avoid them, I use the same technique to avoid panhandlers, they are a bigger issue because they can get violent. |

| Heehee my dad attracts crazy people as well... I haven't seen any pan handlers yet. I am going to try to walk to the festival down the road and see how long I can stay. So maybe I will see some then. Since they are more prone to violence as you say I will probably just run from them. |

Do you wear excessive makeup? Tattoos? Maybe it's an odd posture or you loiter in 'bad neighborhoods' close to the street...it also depends on where you're at

type it. I had a drunk guy on the bus home from community college yestarday...he told this fat guy "you are a big man, and I am small"..... XD
also talked about "God bless America" and Obama....he said he was from nigeria but he seemed middle eastern...immigrant.
oh and he made noises like a cat..."meow!"...
also funny as he got on the bus and I saw him today...he was sober but still with the "God bless america" when he left.

if you have to leave, tell them I have to go; I have some stuff to do (make up or explain what you have to do)....

dudette...I do that and I LIVE in the city....well I look everytime (Well a lot of the times) the El (Elevated Train) comes by whenever I'm downtown....damn that thing is loud....
..earmuffs would help you...or use/get an mp3 player and play it when downtown
...also yes I go get juttery when walking in intersections with cars everywhere and I run/alk faster if I see them coming..i dont want get hit

lol...erm...I never needed a gun....my mom only carries pepper spray also...the bums/homeless guys/drunks won't provoke you to that level...then again I'm a african-american male so that might factor into it....you being female might factor.
EDIT: and the times, often they're in areas with crowds...

OOOOOooo Lots of typed things. Thank you both very much- that gave me some really good tips.
(And no. If I got a tattoo I would be mercilessly slaughtered. LAWL. Seriously.) My posture I have been told is odd. I will have to work on those things.

honestly, I'd say is it worth it to conform via your posture if it seems 'weird' or anything and doesn't offend and threaten people?
Also, would they say you were a prostitute in certain parts of the city or regions, etc?

I bet the looking at cars thing is it.
Also: For a while I dressed in very ragged (yet fully-covering and utterly unsexy) clothes. From time to time, strangers would startle me by suggesting that I might like to give them blow-jobs in exchange for drugs. Now I dress very formally, and don't get that problem even if I am standing around staring vaguely about. They think that I am foreign, and lost. |

Look at your watch and say you have an appointment. It's a lie, but it is probably less damaging than an awkward conversation neither of you want to have.
Your original conversation with the homeless person probably suffered that fate because neither of you had the skills to end it!  Happens between aspies, too... neither person knows when to end a conversation, so you end up talking forever. I've learned to just be kind of rude and say "We should stop talking now, I have to do things today".

Not really, but it kind of sucks when they accost you in the lobby of your building. A lot of homeless people here in Alberta, theres tons of jobs, but not enough housing, and what ever places are up for rent are to expensive for low income earners. |
