Just out of interest Tim, why do you want to learn Armenia?
I am obsessed with the Middle East myself, and while Armenia is not really Middle Eastern it does border several Middle Eastern nations and I am very interested in visiting Armenia. The one problem may be that I hope to move to the real Middle East in the future, and that Armenia tends to have difficult visa requirements for the Middle Eastern countries due to political tendencies. _________________ You did it again, yes, you in the mirror

Just curious about other parts of the world. I am intrigued by Central Asia as well (the 'Stans). _________________ When you need something, that's a responsibility, that only an adult...of my maturity...Bunnies!!!

Then you need cyrillic alphabet. It is a drag. I am obsessed by the Middle East and want to learn Arabic and Hebrew, but the problem is that they use a totally different alphabet. So before learning grammar and words, you need to adapt to a new alphabet and characters set.
Tim, check out sites such as MyHappyPlanet. It is a language exchange project, which means you post the languages you speak and the ones you want to learn. Then you browse profiles to find someone with the other way around: knows the language you want to learn, and wants to learn the language you know. Next you start becoming penpals and help each other in learning each others language. You could find someone on the site who speaks Armenian and wants to improve his English, and then you would bascally help him with his English while he teaches you some basic Armenian instead. A fun way of learning languages and you may make some nice penpals as well meanwhile _________________ You did it again, yes, you in the mirror

Hi Tim,
There's lots of stuff out there, for any learning style. I like learning different languages, and being an overwhelmingly visual learner, have worked out a way to learn all of the basic skills - reading, hearing, speaking and writing - with reasonable success. Being a visual learner, new alphabets came fairly easy for me; for example, I can now read the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet without too much struggle.
If you are like most aspies and are good at understanding systems, you'll probably do well with a textbook course with an accompanying audio, like the "Teach Me" series. If you can't find it at Amazon, go to your local bookstore and order it.
Once you have a basic familiarity with the language and have mastered everyday words, you can read magazines, newspapers, and books in the language. For languages I am just learning, I find magazines fairly easy to read, newspapers a bit tougher, and books much more challenging.
Enjoy your foray into the language and customs of Armenia! |

Thanks!
I'm a sucker for languages that use alphabets other than Latin. _________________ When you need something, that's a responsibility, that only an adult...of my maturity...Bunnies!!!
