i rip on Final Fantasy a lot on this forum, but there are indeed games in the series i love. FFIV and FFVI stand out, and FFVII is still a good game (but nowhere near the masterpiece fans make it out to be).
that's why right now I'd like to bring attention to what i think is one of the great under-appreciated gems of the series, Final Fantasy IX. where as characters in more popular FF titles (like VIII and X) were either too whiny or too cloying, FFIX's cast had none of this along with a plot that had plenty of charm and wit to spare. each member of the cast was also very unique in their combat style, so each one had a use and a purpose during battle (my particular favorite was the combat/magic interplay between Steiner and Vivi). i honestly feel if all the new fans had been more used to a cartoonier Final Fantasy game (like IV and VI were) and they hadn't gone through that whole strategy guide controversy this title would've been more well-received.
anyone else a fan of IX? _________________ OH GOODIE!.net

| Yes! My favorite of the series that appeared on PS1. I found the game play to be the most fun and I liked the overall flow of the game. |

| You know what is really cool about 9 is that it allows two player co-op mode and you can assign which controller is in charge of which individual characters. I have always wondered why this feature never showed up in the main franchise again. Unfortunately I have never gotten a chance to play co-op mode in it but the game had such a fluid battle system I am sure it is a lot of fun. |

I could not stand the trite story, characters and worst of all the incredibly slow battle system. You could just about queue up commands in that game, go make a sandwich and a coffee and come back to take your character's next turn, and that was even if you did nothing but attack and had ATB speed on max.
In that generation of games Grandia was most comparable to FFIX and it was far superior. Gameplay and overall package-wise, that is. The crashing bug on the PS1 version brought it down though. |

Yes, Final Fantasy IX is one of the better games in the series. I personally prefer it over VII, but then again VII is not one of my favorites in the series at all...
What's this strategy guide controversy of which you speak? I'm curious about this.

I consider it the best PS1 Final Fantasy game, although I hated the uncontrollable Trance system that substituted for Limit Breaks, and there were no multi-hitting attacks. _________________ People and planets and stars will become dust. i like ff7 through till ff9. ofc i only played the demo of ff7 and ff8 but i played most of final fantasy 9. i think i got to the third disk then lost my memory card and eventually my bad caretaking skills seemed to give the disk one too many scratches -_-. but it was a brilliant game. so probably down to not actually playing the full game of 7 and 8. but ff9 is infact my fave. _________________ Coregazer |

Actually, this feature is present in the original SNES version of FFVI or FFIII as it was known at the time. I believe they implemented that feature then because one of the characters had a special attack that required specific control pad input, and it was assumed not everyone would be able to execute it properly. |

That was in FF4 and FF5 as well, but in FF4 it was deleted from the American version >_< |

9 was definitely a good one. It was catered more to the older FF fan though which is why I think a lot of the newer FF fans(from FF7 on) kind of ignored it. I had a fun time with time it.
I do fault it a bit for a lousy final boss. Too out of nowhere and too easy. I was wanting something truly epic for the final boss, but got disappointed sorely in that.
I still remember some of things from when it came out. A lot of people were in uproar over Zidane having a a tail and SD look Also the Prima player's guide was nothing more than a $20 ad for Playonline. Oh and the obvious ripping of Yoda's lines from Star Wars at the ending... lol. _________________ Current obsessions: Berserk
