No $%!^, you #$%^&*!
So I just got introduced to a person and said, "Nice to meet you," and shook his hand. The next thing out of his mouth was, "You're pretty quiet." Having heard this phrase tens of thousands of times before, I nodded and mumbled, "yeah." Then I felt offended and turned away and ignored him.
Gee, thanks for pointing out my social iniquities, mister. Is it that obvious? Can people really tell there is something 'off' about me within 30 seconds? Now I feel depressed. |

He may have only been making an innocent observation, in an effort to draw you out. Admittedly lame, it's at least better than making an off-hand comment about your hair, your eyes, your lips, or your cleavage.
If I may, I suggest that you don't turn away so quickly next time. Maybe say something like, "I'd rather listen" instead. _________________ The leaders of the American automobile industry have been amazingly consistent in their management philosophy, in that they have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. |

Someone says "You're pretty quiet."
I reply softly "Oh well" or "Yep"
They will most likely never talk to me again anyways. I think it is rude of them to criticize me for just being me. _________________ When I lose an obsession, I feel lost until I find another. |

| That is the moment when you whip out your loud hailer, like Michael Stipe did on top of the pops UK back in 1989 so he didn't have to be seen miming the words to orange crush. |

I just say
"I have never been told that before".
It is a subtle dig. It is like saying, "I usually am talkative, but around you I am quiet. You should take it personally that I am quiet around you." |

I get it too, I just smile and nod my head then look at something past their shoulder, its sort of fun to
screw with some people, they often get this confused look and walk away with a puzzled expression. _________________ Visit me @ Neural Deviant

No wonder I have felt so down today. I just got my period. For the first time in almost two years. Because I was pregnant and am still breastfeeding. Damn. I like not getting my period.

No worries, though. It's what's on your mind. _________________ The leaders of the American automobile industry have been amazingly consistent in their management philosophy, in that they have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. |

A couple of years ago, someone I've known for a few years told me, "you're a pretty aloof guy." I didn't really know what to say, so I just had to shrug it off and try to move on.
Unless you intend to give an hour-long speech about the sum totality of your life thus far, better get used to it. |

"You're so quiet..."
"You're always so serious..."
"What's wrong?..."
"You never smile..."

awh im sorry i have the saaame problem sometimes.. i think being comfortable with yourself and accepting that you're a quiet person will help to gaurd you from the pain you feel everytime they say it believe me i used to get it alll the time.. but the more afraid i was of being told that all the timethe worse it was.. now it doesn't bother me as much.. i say 'yep' or somethin... it's not like they need an explanation.. just need to point out the obvious to break the ice for themselves so they dont think you hate them or something. *hugz* |
