Witchcraft rumor sparks riot at Congo soccer game

Quote:
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Accusations that a soccer player was using witchcraft during a match in eastern Congo sparked a riot that killed 13 people, a U.N.-funded radio station reported Monday.

Most of the victims were between the ages of 11 and 16, Radio Okapi said. They were suffocated as panicked crowds ran for the exits during the mayhem Sunday in Butembo in eastern Congo's North Kivu province.

Radio Okapi said police tried to control the violence at Matokeo stadium by firing into the air to protect their commander, who was hit in the head and wounded by fans.

The two local clubs involved were Socozaki and Nyuki System, the radio said.

Dozens of teenagers marched through Butembo's dirt streets Monday in protest, and the regional governor, Julien Mpaluku, paid a visit to the hospital.

Mpaluku said the government was investigating.

He made no mention of witchcraft, but confirmed that soldiers had fired into the air to calm angry crowds. The shooting prompted panic instead, which became fatal ``when the crowds all tried to leave at the same time.''

``Most of the dead were children, only two or three were adults,'' Mpaluku said.

North Kivu has been the epicenter of violence between Congo's army and rebels over the last year which has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Don't soccer fans usually complain that American football is too violent?

Wow, people still believe in witchcraft? Guess they're still where Europe was just a few hundred years ago! The real problem was with the soldiers firing into the air. How was that supposed to calm the crowd?

I don't trust anyone who practises witchcraft. Pagan, Wiccan, whatever you call yourself ...

These people are so paranoid of witchcraft it's really sad.... they don't even know that it actually is.

It is a craft that someone specializes in, like a talant, and a witch is someone who is considered very wise (the first witches where doctors) One of my biggest talents is music, so that would be my craft.

How the meaning got lost in history is beyond me.

That is what I found confusing, Black Magic is forbidden in paganism, but they where still punished anyway and tourtured into converting.

people who do black magic are shunned by pagans.

My church believes in witchcraft. We believe it is evil and that witches are the whores of Satan. Even the well-meaning ones.

Yes, but do you believe in witch hunts and burning people at the stake? Do you believe such 'magic' is the main cause of evil is the world, or do hum-drum forces explain things ... ordinary factors like greed, anger, ignorance, and other human traits that can occur in anyone?

Is modern day witchcraft as harmless as the modern-day witches would have you believe? I suspect that bad reputation of Wicca is not entirely undeserved. You won't see me burning anyone at the stake, but as Christian I do not trust witchcraft.
