I've been listening to a lot f bad grammar from a few people that I know over the past year in particular. One of the mistakes that drives me bananas is when someone says a sentence or makes a statement and it comes out in the form of a question. Another examlpe is whenpeople over the age of 19 peppers their sentences with the word, like. Another example is when people over a certian age use the word, Totally a lot when they answer me. Another thing that drives me insane is when people over a certian age answers by saying, "Like a yeah!" What is that supposed to mean? Maybe I'm just too Old-Fashioned to be around in this time, or I might be too British-Minded to be living in North America. It's okay if people 19 or younger make those errors, but it's not okay if grownups make them. What do the rest of you think?

I know this is not really about bad grammar, but kids my age tend to overuse the word "gay," mainly in the wrong definition. There are other words they overuse, too, such as "retarded."

My husband used bad grammar, improper pronunciation, and misplaced cliches all the time. After 22 years, I stopped correcting him. If he wants to sound like an A$$ that's his problem. Unfortunately, most people don't even realize he's speaking incorrectly! Shocked

....sometimes it's painful to have been an English major.... Wink

people that use "text language" for example:

Hey, how r u 2day? wat r u up 2?

They annoy the hell out of me and it looks like their IQ dropped about 50 points.

Alternate caps are annoying, too

HeLlO ThErE HoW ArE YoU

That's about all.

And substituting symbols for letters: $ for S, 3 for E, ! for L....

My husband really annoys me: he uses the word "ironic" for everything, and he hasn't a clue what it means. Now isn't THAT ironic!!! Rolling Eyes

i am a grammar/syntax/spelling pedant to the nth degree.

pet hates:

none were (should be none was)
less people (fewer)
head butt (to butt is to hit with your head)
hopefully (misused to death)
and all those ghastly words to which the phrase "there isn't a noun that can't be verbed" applies - prioritise... sorry - too concerned about my blood pressure to write any more of them.

and as for losing the poor "u"..... color, neighbor.... i may faint...

I used to (ages 2-13) correct everybody's grammer. Even in the newspaper! After somebody punched me for correcting them in middle school; I ended up in the guidence office. I told the consuler *exactly* what the conversation entailed. They pointed out that people don't like being corrected. So I stopped it (If I remembered) and no longer correct people's grammer.

I live in an area where people say "Ain't" all the time. It makes me sick. The only person I know who hates that word is my friend Courtney. I tell them to say it correctly, but they don't listen. I also hate people who act like hillbillies or act stupid. Sometimes they do it when they're actually smart! Mad Ick.

Yours truly,

Christopher Grills

I have noticed over the years that those who use bad grammar are oblivious to the effect they have on those of us who are well-read and know the King's English. I think it is the same as someone who is playing a song on an instrument that is out of tune or singing off key in abandon. They don't hear the discordant tones but those of us with better pitch are cringing and wincing in aural pain. Those of us who hear those wrong words or incorrect usage cringe at the sound. It does sound like one of the writers objects to people over 19 using more "hip" phrases when they should sound their age. When I was younger we used words like "keen", and "groovy", and "solid", and everyone was a "man" man. I remember thinking anyone over thirty who talked like us should just shut up and act their age instead of trying to fit in. This is what I think your older friends are doing, just trying to fit in. You will understand in a few years how age and a sense of belonging can affect your judgement. Smile at us, roll your eyes when we aren't looking, and assume a knowing look. An aging hippie, Kenorri
