this is actually very embarrising since I took an a level in computing...
but in both of my browsers (IE and firefox) there is no background colour anymore in the webpages I visit; it is instead starkest white. Do you know how I could fix this? _________________ I will NEVER become arrogant. After all, that's what a normal person would succumb to in my situation. |

In my local Firefox account, in the "chrome" directory, I put a file called "userContent.css" which contains:
| Code: | td.row1 { background : #BBE4A6 ! important }
td.row2 { background : #B8D0F0 ! important } |
That was just as a test (and I've forgotten to remove it), but it works fine, exchanging the alternate post background colours. E.g. in my Firefox, your initial post above comes out on the pale green background, instead of the pale blue.
However, playing that game will only affect Firefox.
I can't think of any way you can have had the same effect manifesting in both IE and Firefox simultaneously.
However... one thing that occurs to me... might you have somehow caused your firewall to block the WrongPlanet CSS file?
The active one comes from wrongplanet.cachefly.net (style.css). If your firewall blocks that site, you'd lose formatting. I think you'd also lose most avatars.
===============
In fact... just to see what happens, I've just made my firewall block wrongplanet.cachefly.net and it does just what I expected: the page displays very plainly and your avatar disappears. _________________ Phases of a project: (1) Exultation.
