Do you think people don't take you as seriously because you're autistic?
I know that because a lot of us greatly lack social skills in most peoples' eyes we may come across as alternately cold, scary, or silly, and those of us who come across as silly probably aren't taken particularly seriously.
I mean, have you ever suffered an instance where you had a serious gripe or complaint but were told you were throwing an "Autistic tantrum" when you voiced it? Once I refused to go to a school pep rally as protest and made a point of ignoring the idiot school coach who demanded that I go to that f***ing fascist nazi training session disguised as a "school spirit" event, and accused me of being autistic when I shoved the fantasy novel I was reading in his face and flipped him off. Would rather have been called a "punk" for doing that than "autistic", would've definitely been a lot more of a compliment to me. Next thing he and the other school staff members did was grab me by the arms and throw me to the ground and then drag me to the f***ing office when I couldn't get up.
Even when I voice complaints with people without flipping them off or anything like that I still get told that I'm autistic or retarded because of how much I hate what they're doing and how unafraid I am of expressing it.
A lot of times when I voice my dissatisfaction with people, especially parents and authority figures, they pull the "he must be autistic/retarded" card to invalidate my point completely.
Seems in the past I've calmed down and let people do whatever the hell they want and just went along with everything they said to avoid stuff like that, mostly because I'm afraid of them somehow managing to read my diagnosis into it.

Well I don't have autism, just aspergers but I don't normally tell ppl. It's the ones on the sites that know and take what I type literally.

I've worked on my anger issues but yeah, usually when someone pisses me off, I get pissed at them. It's nothing that different from NTs except for the fact that maybe I have in the past taken things a little too far. But yeah, I'm kind of getting a little sick of sites saying how much aspies whine. To me it's another label and yeah I sometimes don't take aspies seriously but there are those who I would define as individuals who do have trouble coping with some things in life. I don't blame AS for my suicidal trips to the hospitals but I can look back and say that yeah AS with some of the circumstances that came out of it was a contributor. I only say that, because I was not diagnosed at the time. So I had many people not take me seriously when I had my episodes before many of them including myself knew I had AS.

I get that alot of the time. I find I always need some sort of proof to go with my views. Or they just ignore me, but then again, I don't tell many people. My father and step mother don't believe me cos I don't display the same tendencies as my cousin...

I guess I don't worry about being taken seriously, I guess I am too autistic to care but I know the other day my boyfriend mentioned that he doesn't like to tell people about his AS because he is afraid people won't take him seriously. Confused

No, they don't.

The NT Files Files Files: Someone recently gave the tip to repeat repeat repeat.

I've been watching conversations on cops-rather something caught my ear as it played on my one channel (adjusts bunny ears and aluminum foil).

It was weird, something like someone says "Blah blah blah! dun dun duh" and the policeman looked at him all head side cocked and exclaimed, "He did what?!?"

And I went, "Twitch."

Now see, if this was ME. DEPENDING ON the circumstance The officer's response there would have just told me about how crazy and unbelieveable he considers me to be-or rather about how not taking it seriously HE/SHE is. Then I would refrase or dumb down the statement of facts for the then 'incompetent' Professional to be able to wrap his brain around.
Or I would get intimidated and clam up which results in the appearance of deception.
Or I would wait for the person to procure further instructions. (which they actually expect YOU to do FOR THEM).

I swear my almost whole life has been the pursuit of "how to" file a police report.

Which is entirely backwards as the statement "He did what?!?" is not asking for a rephrasing or a repeating of info, it is a 2 tiered multifunction indicating an emotional response (which I don't need) as well as a prompt to elaborate.

I rarely tell anyone I have AS, for fear of not being taken seriously or being treated differently.

I just saided to my new class. Dosent seem like they really care whether or not that I have AS. They are just as nice as before Razz so i dont see a reason not telling ppl.

I feel exactly the same way. Just like black people were dehumanized and treated as worthless for hundreds of years, and now we're about to have our first biracial president. The situation with autistics may go the same way, NOT that an autie will ever run our country, but maybe in later years, autistics will be considered important and their contributions to society will be more recognised in a POSITIVE way. There's more to a person than a label; autistics deserve the same treatment and respect as everyone else. And as far as the "autistic/disabled" card goes, people are so quick to pull that as soon as they see the slightest difference in someone with that label. If a person had not had a diagnosis of autism or asperger's and they were acting the same way, their behavior would have been considered normal. To wrap up my reply, just try to open the eyes of people that cannot see beyond the label.
