I'm pretty particular about what I eat - fried things, too much sugar, high-carb foods just don't agree with me (or my lifestyle.) So when coworkers bring in donuts/cookies/baked goods EVERY FRICKIN' MORNING, I just stay at my desk & ignore them.
However, I once read that people get offended (either consciously or subconsciously) if they offer you food & you turn them down. Evidently it's a trust issue - people think you don't trust them if you won't eat their food. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking that my refusal to have a donut with the gang is just another thing that makes me "different" and stand-offish in their eyes.
So I'm just wondering - anyone else see this as a problem?

 Yeah - I'm probably making way too much of it. 
(And yes, somewhere along the way I lost my taste for sweets. Now dark chocolate - that's another matter entirely. No day is complete without chocolate!)

MMMMMM, Donuts.
I think, if you briefly tell them why you do not eat those particular foods, then bring in your own healthy alternative for yourself and join the crowd every once in awhile then the issue might eliminate itself. Someone might even bring you something more to your liking?
Donuts are seen as a treat to most and I have worked in similar places where people and/or management like to "treat" their co-workers or employees from time to time. Sometimes this can get outta hand though.
I worked at a big cube farm and no joke, the first 3 months I think I spent more time in birthday parties, retirement luncheons and baby showers than in my cube. Every other day, someone was passing around the birthday card or greeting card and I dreaded that more than the parties because what the heck I am suppose to write.
Anyway, just a thought. |

It was a problem when I was dating Romanian. You see its good manners in Romania to constantly offer your guest food and his mother wanted to make a good impression for me.
The plate she served me for breakfast had more food on it that I'd typically eat in 3 days. Lunch, supper, and dinner, began with a large bowl of soup, larger than I'd have if that was all I was eating, then a main course with several sides. Also, half a loaf of bread for each of us. And then snacks every 10 minutes in between meals. She didn't know english and just kept constantly coming up to me with food saying "to eat?" "to eat?" and sometimes I'd just say yeah because i was ignoring her and would then end up with this gigantic snack I didn't want

I will sometimes take the proffered donut and put it aside...intimating that I'm "saving" it for later. At that point I just ditch the thing in some kleenex when noone is looking. Voila...problem solved!!!
I also make a big deal about choosing the right one, and am always pleased when they have "my favourite".

| To be honest, I will never partake of any cream-filled donut. I usually go for the chocolate-dip or the double-chocolate donuts. Nothing's sadder than plowing through a box of donuts at home by yourself. |

There are so many things that I cannot eat, it is not funny.
If someone mentions something to you about your not eating donuts, I would just politely inform them that they don't agree with you. No need to go into details on that subject, pretty sure everyone has SOMETHING that just doesn't agree with them.
On the other side, if you feel that you may be offending people with your "not sharing" I recommend stopping at the bagel place on the way to work every once in a while and bringing in a more healthy alternative to donuts, partake and share. They will probably be glad for a change, just get a couple different varieties and couple different spreads. (Just make sure YOU don't compare them out loud to the donuts.)
[edit]If bagels are too high carb for you, perhaps some fresh fruit that has been "artfully" arranged. (some whipped cream on the side for those with more sweet tastes.) [/edit]

haha that happened to me in Portugal. i was having a dinner at my friend's parents' house. his mother was like a Borg, resistence was futile. i was about to die from overeating. i tried to refuse but she wouldn't let me. and she actually enjoyed persuading me to push the stuff into my mouth. she is a teacher in high school, so she is in fact trained in this.

I know what you mean. I learned how to write "i am going to town" in Romanian, and I just coincidentally had a reason to go to town every time she arrived at the apartment
