When my last computer broke, I kind of felt a feeling of shock that lingered for a long time. Computers/the internet are a major part of my life, so when my computer broke I almost didn't want to believe that my computer actually broke.

It was such an awful time when my computer broke, because the space-bar on my computer broke a couple days before my actual computer 'died'. My computer shut down by itself while I was listening to the Eminem song 'Fack'. I wondered 'WTF'? I tried turning my computer on. It only stayed on for five minutes, then shut off again. I repeatedly pressed the power button until finally I heard this 'crackle' sound, and my power supply blew up, shooting long sparks at the wall. After this happened, I couldn't even turn my PC on at all.

At first I figured that it was just my power supply that was broken, but that apparently wasn't the case. I had purchased a new power-supply, but the same damn thing happened to it when I hooked it up to my PC. It's still a mystery as to what is wrong with my old PC. It's still sitting here behind me with the side case panel off it.

Anyways, after my computer 'died', I was without for a computer for a year and a half. Right after getting a new PC, I joined up to this site. It was while not having a computer that I finally realized that I possibly had asperger's syndrome. While not having a computer I spent most of my time reading literature, watching movies and listening to music.

I usually swear vitriolic rage against any individual, company, nation or race involved in the compute industry, hit the bloody thing a few times, dispose of it and buy another or, if a minor issue, waste time repairing it.
Unfortunately, the damnable things have become a necessity. You try constructing theoretical interaction models of neuclic materials without one!
Luckily, I now keep three computers - so I don't much have to worry.

I throw one of my other computers into service or toss together one from spare parts.

but then I switched to Linux in 2005 and it hasn't broken since then.

I haven't had a computer "break".

Mind you, one laptop, which never ran for long on its battery pack, has now got a fudged universal power supply, replacing the underpowered PS that replaced the dead original PS for a while, and probably made it so it won't now tolerate having its battery pack plugged in.

And... I haven't turned on my "old" PC tower case this year. I recently stole its floppy drive, a while back, for the "new" PC tower case, versus this "current" PC tower case, versus the QL tower case, etc.

I fix it, like any other self respecting AS geek. The secret is to make regular backups of your data because one day that hard drive WILL fail or that power supply WILL burst into flames.

I expect computers to fail so generally I just calmly fix it. If it is a virus I get pissed at the nasty little sh** that wrote the virus, then fix it, generally it is someone else's computer with the virus so I tell them off for going onto the internet using windows instead of linux.

A year and a half without a computer eeewwwwww, that would be a financial priority even if I could only afford someone else's boat anchor.

I've only got the one laptop. Crying or Very sad If it breaks, I'm more or less screwed.
