When I was little I was never hungry but constantly thirsty. I could drink and drink and drink but still have a dry feeling in the back of my throat. School was awful because they would not let me leave to get a drink. When I brought a water bottle they accused me of drinking too much. I also had to go to the restroom like every fifteen seconds. The teachers would rarely let me go because I had been known to play around in there so I would often have accidents. My mother had me tested for diabetes umpteen times but it always came back negative. I've heard of a condition called Prader-Willi syndrome where a person can never feel full. But is there a condition where a person can never quench their thirst?

Yes, there are such conditions - many of them.

I have experienced the same thing for my whole life. I'm always thirsty, and I get dehydrated really easily. I've been tested for all the common causes of this. The tests indicate that I'm completely healthy. The doctors say it's probably just a weird physiological quirk or they imply that I must be exaggerating.

I wish there was something identifiable causing my constant thirst and dehydration, and that it was easy to treat.

I get that but there is a reason, I have something called Insulin resistance which is similar to diabetes (and often leads to diabetes). I've heard Auties have a high incidence of insulin resistance so that could be it.

I am diabetic. I've always been a HUGE water drinker. I swear sometimes I drink my body weight in a day and I'm a big gal. LOL! MY blood sugar levels are very well controlled and rarely high, so my thirst is not from the diabetes. It's terrible right now because I'm on some pain meds that cause dry mouth. I constantly have a big 32 oz cup of water or iced tea(no sugar) in front of me and I drink probably 6-7 of those/day.

Insulin resistance is considered a pre-diabetic condition btw. Insulin resistance is a major component of type 2 Diabetes. The body resists the insulin that is created and doesn't utilize it properly. Add in the inability to make enough insulin and you've got Diabetes.

A test for hypoglycemia would reveal insulin resistance, right? You know the test where they tell you to go 12 hours without eating and then draw your blood? (It has a name, but I don't recall it.)

Jennyfoo: yes that's right, insulin resistance means that the cells in your body no longer utilise insulin. The body produces more and more insulin, which raises your androgen levels and finally forces the insulin into your blood. After so many years of over producing insulin, the pancreas gives up and you become diabetic.

EvilKimEvil: Yeah the test you're talking about is GTT Glucose Tolerance Test. You fast, then drink a sugary drink and get blood tests over 2 hours. However it is not always done properly, and doesn't always show something. My first GTT came out with only slight insulin resistance, the second one came out normal. But I get good results from insulin resistance medicine Metformin (also called Diabex or Glucophage). I'm not sure why IR (also called Syndrome X) is so common in Aspies.

God I'm getting thirsty just from reading this thread!

I've been known to drink silly amounts.... but eventually I can get "full", so to speak. It doesn't tend to last long though.

Heck, I remember a time when I used to buy two 2L bottles of Co-Op own-brand Lilt (pineapple and grapefruit fizzy drink) for lunch every day.... and would have drunk all four litres of it by the end of the day easily.

*blink* Unexpected correlation.

I always got in trouble in K-2 for spending too much time at the water fountain; I think it may actually be noted on some of my progress reports. Was also negative for diabetes, but the thirst has remained. Servers hate me in restaurants; I usually just ask for a pitcher or carafe so they don't have to keep running for me.

That's interesting to hear.

I've been accused of drinking 'too much' since childhood too. Also, people wanted to stop me from drinking, because they figured I shouldn't be to the toilette as often.

I do feel full after drinking a lot, though I can drink and drink and drink water (and some other kinds of drinks) and not feel full at all. I get thirsty very very often and always need something to drink nearby.

I wasn't tested for anything ever concerning this. I mean, it's always been like this according to my parents. I know my blood sugar levels are/were normal, though I tested low (some 70ish).

I can go through a half-gallon of tea, a 20 ounce soda and several glasses of water a day. Shocked

I don't exactly have an unquenchable thirst, mines kind of different. If a beverage is put in front of me I'll drink it usually as fast as possible without thinking of it. Doesn't really matter what it is (Which tends to get me in trouble at bars) But I also have problems when eating out and about. I usually have to get my own pitcher of water or caraffe of coffee because I drink stuff too fast. Sometimes I'll take a freshly made pitcher of crystal light with me to drink while surfing the web and find that I've drank the whole 2 quarts in 15 minutes...I only notice when I pick up my cup and its empty and then go to refill it and the pitchers empty as well...

The opposite is true though as well if theres nothing in front of me to drink I usually don't think about it and there are days that the only time I have something to drink is with a meal.

I get a dry mouth when I'm tired, and the only cure is to lie down and get some rest (very aggravating). I tend to drink a lot of water or pop. I think it's a way of trying to keep going so I don't have to have a nap. If I'm really tired I fall asleep regardless. zzz

I think it's because I push myself too hard all the time.
