I wouldn't want to try. If I never die, I'll never get to meet my Maker.

It's not technogically impossible - one day. Not today.
Even still; imagine a world like that? We're overpopulated as it is. Most people need to die - and an estimated 99.98% of the human population could not psychologically handle immortality. That can only be a rough estimate, of course, I'd hate to see the efforts someone must go through to clarify it, considering the state of the world. Seems a believeable number, though.
Me, I can handle immortality, and it's no secret my life's work is to achieve that. I may do that - no guarantee, slim chance, but still, I'll try. But I can do it - my mindset and conceptual grasp are the right frame. I feel no sense of loss at the passing of others, years are insignificant, and, of course, I am nothing like anybody else. So, again, I can.
But other people? Science fiction writers, even, have pointed out the likeliehood of decay and extreme overpopulation by masses perverting natural order. Most living things simply must die.

Ishmael you can say that again.. However, isn't it peculiar how just about everything in science fiction turns out to be real soon after? Personally, since the government pretty much has to tell the people about its technological breakthroughs, I find scifi to sometimes be their special little way of doing it, calling it "fiction" at first to get people used to the ideas.

True as that may be, I think some ideas will always be pure fantasy. And should remain pure fantasy.

Well, saucers are man made: http://www.freewebs.com/vril/howvrilwaspowered.htm
Teleportation, sulphur based life forms (among many others), wormholes, extra dimensions, telekinetic abilities, mind control, memory altering/technology controlled by the mind, phasers that shoot through walls etc etc etc turned out to be real as well. Wait, exactly which ones did you say will always be pure fantasy? lol

Immortality is pipe dream. And if it's not, it should be.

How long do you have to live before you become insane?

Actually it isn't, it's just something we supposidly haven't achieved yet. So far we have the technology to store a mind on a huge amount of classic supercomputers. As in, someones entire consciousness. Imagine putting it in a compact quantum computer, and installing it into a synthetic body. I'm sure someones probably done it before Wink Razz

Can you call that living? Just because you are able to do something does not mean you should do it.

I would call that living. Flesh is a device; consciousness is important.
But the trick is to not copy the mind; but shift the original. Besides which, a nanotech biosynthetic construct could be virtually indistinguishable from flesh and bone, save for strength, restoration, no ageing, secondary RAM and live networking. I could probably fix up some useful vision tricks. That would give me the time I need to finish my goal.
The ordinary person, however, should never have access to it. Unless you can comprehend and employ the technologies involved personally, you cannot be trusted.

I'm not kidding, I am actually working on this, and will be for so long as I am able. I can psychologically handle it, for me it's necessary. I have something to do. For other people?
In black and White, ordinary people live only to breed the next generation and die.
May seem cruel, but that's biology.

There's so much more to life than breeding. I'm pretty sure that breeding is not my purpose. Without purpose we would not exist. We are all here to do what we are all here to do.

My "purpose" is one given me by the mathematics of my psychology.
Eventual quantum integration and matter manipulation.
Essentially to become a being of pure energy, much as science-fiction has simplified the concept for the lowest common denominator.
To be beyond petty worldly concerns, and to simply dominate reality. If I could some day encompass the universe in it's entirety within my mind. The technology and knowledge I would need, though! Staggering! Far too much for a mortal span.
