I can't remember ever playing or socialising with other children in nursery (ages 3-4 I think). I try and and try but I can't remember ever playing with them. All I remember is playing on my own and wishing they'd leave me alone. I wanted to put the road set together *my* way and make the cars drive on it *properly*, not all over it like everyone else was doing.
I wanted to be left alone with the windmill Dad built for me from a construction set when he left me at the beginning of the day. Don't remember doing much with it, but I just wanted to be on my own with my windmill.
I played with little shiny colourful tile things in a box and kept 'planting' them so that they woud grow into something (I can't remember what) and the 'owl' would tell me when they were ready - this was copying something we had watched in nursery. I don't know what programme it was. All on my own.
I dressed up as a schoolboy with the dressing-up clothes but I didn't want to join in with the princesses games the others were playing.
I didn't want to share my vehicles in the playground.
I don't remember Reception class (ages 4-5?). I only remember properly having friends in year two or three, although I'd invited friends to my birthday party before.
I was always told I was being bossy when I had friends round (which wasn't often).
Yet I *did* like having friends round and I *could* do imaginitive play (and not having a TV meant lots of time was spent on such play).
Playtimes at school were often spent with one other person - either 'driving' round for ages on the lines 'in Land Rovers' or 'riding horses' with someone even worse than me socially. Playtime after playtime. The skill games were fun too, if I was allowed to join in - Grandma's footsteps, tig etc.
All the time, the signs conflict. I had loads of Aspie traits and still do and yet I can't be or have been Aspie because I *did* have imaginitive play and I *could* socialise. Sort of.
Ah, what the heck. Sorry, I'm just rambling on for my own sake really. Sorry. _________________ I don't have Aspergers, I'm just socially inept

How is imaginable play unaspielike?
Playing imaginably is a form af letting your mind wander around and being creative.
I can not remember socializing at all until about 2nd grade (7-8 ). Otherwise anybody taking apart my lego creations in kindegarten was in big trouble!

I played with my sister, but I can't remember playing with other kids 'til fifth grade, when I started hanging out with the kindergarten/1st/2nd graders. After that I gave up on socializing until college, when I made my first real friends among the 'nerdy' types. _________________ Engineering student. Gamer. Christian. Asexual. Information Addict. As for nursery school, I DO remember naps, waiting for the slide, teeter/totter, etc... I think I MUST have been on the merrygoround at that time also, because I know I stopped before 8. Still, I was kind of a loner.
I had some BIG birthday parties, but frankly really knew few there. I DO remember graduation though. WOOPIE!
Aspies CAN have imaginative play, and CAN sort of socialize! |
