When you're feeling particularly down, blue, depressed, sad, disappointed, unhappy with yourself...what do you do to comfort yourself? I really could use some new ideas because my tried and true ones are not working anymore, given the magnitude of my problems and consequent depression...

Ugh... Alcohol or random acts of violence - I wouldn't particularly recommend either one.

I stim, play cello, jump, excersize, read a good book, but I remember a couple months ago I was really down and none of those worked like they usually do. So I just sat around depressed and did nothing about it because I couldn't. I hope you can either find a way out of it or just tough it up.

I try to do something creative. I don't know how to express my feelings, but listening to some music or doing something creative really helps. Personally, I like to fingerpaint. I like the colors, the textures, everything about it. My boyfriend's mom is a watercolorist and has no use for canvases, so she gave all her olds ones to me. Comes in handy.

I usually write stories. As of late that hasn't been working though. Just can't seem to get thoughts onto paper. Really hope i find something, toughing it out is getting.... tough.

Watch old movies, listen to old radio serials on my mp3 player (I can listen to old time radio circa 1930-1950 for days),write, go cycling. I found the movie "Repo Man" has a strange effect on my outlook on life and every time Im really down I watch that.

Sitting picking locks also keeps me distracted when Im feeling blue, obviously not one on peoples houses or anything I've been collecting old padlocks and doorlocks (without the doors) and pick those...it's a hobby Wink

Go for walks, listen to music for hours on end, get lost in stories in my mind, play games (video games), clean, sleep. Other than the walks and cleaning, the rest are not really productive and just waste time... as in entire days.

It all depends on the type of problem.

Usually I can't help but focus on a problem I've been having if it is practical (people, problems with self), I view it is kind of emotional cutting, there is a kind of sense of satisfaction in it, yet a strong sense of misery that goes a long with it (both bring a sense of motivation), it may be problem specific though (jealousy for the past years). I think physical cutting is stupid though, because all I am doing is turning misery into motivation.

But there comes a time were the feelings get stale and it just tires me out, like that kind of depression not caused by anything specific but you just feel too tired to sleep, I hate that kind of depression, it is like you cannot escape, I just try to find something to put my focus on.

Then there is stress, similar to the above but usually it is revolving around future events. I will try to block out my thoughts of the future and the past, and focus entirely on what is happening in the present moment, this is an official method, there is books about ways of thinking like this.

Filmmaking is my thing, although it has its drawbacks due to the long pre and post-production, so little time is actually spent on set, but those are the happiest times of my life.

Writing is the next best option; it's a great escape and expels a lot of angst, especially when I'm putting characters I quite care about through very emotional situations.

Piano. I would not be around if not for this instrument. I don't usually play other people's songs, I find just improvising is the most cathartic.

Exercise. A quick 10 push-ups can expel a lot of pent up frustration and clear your mind, get you back on track.

I usually also have a song of the moment that makes me feel good, so I play that and turn it up to full volume at the best bit. At the moment it's Rogue Wave's cover of Buddy Holly's Everyday. Can be found here. It's also in the trailer for Jonathan Demme's latest film, Rachel Getting Married.

Oh, also, this Sigur Rós video always moves me.
