Suppose that there is a person who sells his "friendship" for money and plays the role so masterfully well you'd have a hard time not believing that his friendship is real. He'll be your friend and he'll be there for you as long as you give him money.
I argue that if it's ok to pay to have sex with a prostitute, it is also ok to pay this person to be your friend. His friendship will not be real, but he is such a grandiose actor you'll be totally deceived.

If I had the money and the friend was my type I would pay. I want a very specific type of friend who likes the same things as I and complains about the same things as me too.
I want a friend who is a carbon copy of me. That would be great! That's probably why I have such a difficult time finding friends, I keep looking for someones who are just like me and not finding them.
Payment would depend on how much money I have. Naturally.
What am I saying? oKay, maybe it wouldn't depend on the money I have, considering my friend would be a carbon copy of me, she would be worth no less than those auto manufacturing CEOs that went before congress asking for bail out money. I would have to pay, at the very least, $28 million a year, for a carbon copy of me.

That's what most friendships are about anyway. There's some kind of reciprocity going on. They are just allies, sticking together for some mutual benefit. If you fail to keep up your end of the deal, you are history.
As for therapists, I don't think they count. If they are trying to pretend to be your friend, they really stink at it. The premise was that "you'll be totally deceived." |

Yep, that's what I was going to say.

Paying someone to be a friend is not friendship.
I couldn't do it. It would be in the back of my mind that I was paying to have him hang out with me. Would I rather be alone than pay someone to hang out with me? Tough question. But I would probably say that I would rather be alone.
In the past, I MIGHT have said I would pay someone to be my friend and live in the illusion. But I am more grounded in reality now.

$0. I don't need fake friends. I wouldn't even pay someone to be nice to me for a year.
But I did used to give my happy meal toys away as a kid to get my brothers to play with me and their friends. Then I stopped when I was nine. _________________ I'm a Peach

| Not a single penny. The only friends I care about are those who share my interests, and that would be pretty impossible to fake. In real life, I have no friends, and I do just fine without any. |

Friends are priceless.
They're probably more than I can comfortably afford at the moment. |
