I love creating art with Photoshop and I try to improve what I know of photoshop. My question is what are channels and what do you use them for? Also how do you use them in Photoshop?
Thanks!

Here's another one - http://www.mprove.de/script/90/KPT/KPT1.html - very old school (from version 2.0) - but channels really haven't changed. This is from Kai Krause, one of the earliest Photoshop gurus.

Another quick tip for channels is to change the mode to LAB & then use the Lightness channel to only change brightness/contrast (all the color information is in the a & b channels - so changing lightness settings doesn't mess with color balance.) Just remember to switch the mode back to RGB or CMYK if you want to save to jpg (LAB is really only for file manipulation, not distrubution.)

wow, that's very outdated, one can easily duplicate all he did with effects for example, which has the double benefit that it can later be adjusted.

Timpanogos: channels are good for:

1.- selecting something that is difficult, for example say you want to select the white in the next image:

if you check the channels in photoshop, you'll see that one of them gives the best contrast.

2.- it's good for retouching images
let's say you have a face with some red parts, like the skin of someone, and you want to "beautify" him for a magazine, like this:

you change to CMYK, select the MAGENTA channel, and use the sponge tool a little

voilá, the nose now isn't so red

3.- I forgot number three Razz

hope it helps Smile
