| Im made aware that I get irritating and fixated. Ive basically learned to keep a lot to myself. Sometimes I cant help it and I need to talk about my interest. I get asked a lot...."cant you talk about something else?". |

I know not to talk about my special interests all the time. However, since my parents and I all love animals, that is acceptable.
I wish I had not made my special interests so obvious when I was younger. If I had just kept them to myself, as I do now, nobody would have known anything was too different about me. |

I only get two reactions to my "special interests": People either think my enthusiasm for my obsessive fixations are "weird," or they think that it's extremely cute/amusing/fascinating how excited I get when I ramble on about a subject.

There is a deep suspicion in society (well, the society in which I find myself) about people who are interested in things for their own sake, rather using 'interests) than to 'get on' socially, materially or sexually. In the popular imagination the 'nerd' is a mere few steps away from the school-shooter.
Like a lot of things people, 'NTs' if you like, dislike it's based on fear, ridicule and suspicion. After all, who knows WHAT those 'nerds' are getting up to? _________________ "Hulk will fight back as Hulk always fights back--but will Hulk's friends fight beside him? They will not help Hulk. I just made that mistake last night, I was out in a bar with some friends and it was great for an hour or so, we talked about the financial crisis and had a pretty heated debate, anyway, suddenly this girl I didn't even know came over and started chatting about her love life problems with my mate...
of course I imediately spaced out, started yawning and all that. after some time one of my friends asked me if I was just tired and for some reason I was incapable of lying at that particular moment and answered with all sincerity that the girl bores the hell out of me and that I'd rather go back home now and read "Dimensions in Mathematics" (the girl didn't hear it thank god lol).
my friend thought it was a great joke and I thought it would be better to leave it at that lol.
some people do appreciate my special interests though, my local hoodies always chat me up about hip-hop like I'm some expert and I only obsessed about it back in high school and not even for that long. _________________ I got some bad ideas in my head. (Taxi Driver) |

You know what I learned?
Most neurotypicals can be condemned to living a mundane and pasteurized life full of the symbols of medicrity and living in a proscribed fashion dictated by the norms and mores of society, however when I am fighting Nouakchott to resolve the issues that plague Mauritania and the rest of the African Continent, speaking French and Arabic(the country's two official languages) and trying to resolve political disputes between the Berbers, Moors, and Wolofs and Fulani, I would think I am so glad I didn't end up like the majority of the population's condemnation of success is, a manicured, pasteurized and homogenized cardboard box, in a forest of cardboard boxes and a BMW which gets terrible gas mileage, and complaining about perpetual traffic jams on the highway and the awful weakness in my employer's' personality(ies).
See, that's what most neurotypical people are condemned to. As for me, why should I? Just because everybody takes that road, doesn't it make it the best route to go? As for sexual relations, I find someone(I think the person who I am going out with doesn't have the courage within herself to admit to me), and for material wealth, well if I need it, i buy it(most NTs buy things spontaneously and irrationally, and then there are interminable credit card debits and credit card debt commericals. Hmm 1+1= what exactly?). |

Me too, and I've been combining the two by printing out google maps of the local rails, hand annotating them with all the active industrial sidings, identifying the industry and what kind of freight they get and in what quantities and when the local freight does their setouts, and trying to figure out the freight schedules so I can figure out the best times and locations for spotting. Nobody knows I'm doing this because it just seems too eccentric to share with my wife or friends.
I'm an NT (maybe not?) so any one with AS that obsesses about trains and maps would seem quite normal to me. |

I think most people are just a bit stunned/confused by it. Although my obsessions tend to be disturbing/innapropriate so people react differently to those. |

When I was a child, my interests were very different from the norm. But as a teenager, I became obsessed with dance. This is a very hard profession, and takes much perseverance and sacrifice....my "obsessiveness" I guess, was the reason I was successful! In a dance career, I am surrounded by others- mostly NTīs, I think- who are also obsessed...thatīs just the nature of a career in dance, you can only do it if itīs the center of your life. So, I am with like-minded people. For this reason, I was able to make friends and connect with people later in life. But when I am in a group of non-dancers or non-theater people, I often feel horrible...itīs like Iīm a whole other person, and I donīt know what to talk about. But I guess Iīm really lucky because of this interest ...
Of course, at the moment my overriding obsession is Aspergerīs Syndrome and "socializing" in cyberspace on WP...but I have you all to do that with, so again, Iīm lucky... _________________ "death is the road to awe" |

I used to talk about my interests, but my parents used to tell me to 'shut up and stop being boring'. Now, of course, they complain I don't communicate with them. There really is no pleasing people. _________________ "Hulk will fight back as Hulk always fights back--but will Hulk's friends fight beside him? They will not help Hulk. i am really not sure what people in general think of all my toys.
Today I bought for under 5$ a handsome specimen of a homemade..large as a small child Raggedy Andy at a thrift store, (with what look to be old blood stains on his arm for the dash of intrigue)
....and the lady behind the counter talked about how she had bought a raggedy anne recently at a thrift store because it reminded her of her childhood....and the Raggedy that she had when she was little.
and I had to go and blurt out that I have about 100 of them at home.
The lady really didn't have a response....no wait...I told her that I collected, and she asked if it was possible that i had the matching Anne...and I said that I didn't and that most of my Annes and Andys are mismatched...and THEN I blurted that I had about 100 and THEN she got kinda quiet....

There is a veritable cult of horse freaks though. So I am not alone. I will usually glaze even their eyes over eventually though. Live. Breathe. (I won't say Eat someone will get offended.), Exist. Equine. There is nothing else.
My daughter is the same way. |
This is me, only for me it's dogs. I love the cult of the animal people. Unfortunately, my problem has always been that I'll go on and on long beyond the point that someone's expressed interest. I've learned not to bring up any special interest topic on my own. |

How to keep quiet about my special interests was a long and harsh road. I just didn;t get it for the longest time that people really don't give a flying fig about my passions...
God bless my mom, she listened to it all and even helped me find info on many occasions, back in the prehistoric era when there was no internet for quick fixes. Of course I now have to listen to all my kids' obsessions, what goes around comes around. My eyes glaze over at times, but sometimes their obsessions actually interest me so I can go along for the ride (unless the obsession is roller coasters. yikes.)
I can't really rant on about my current obsessions, which is AS like others here, because it would freak a lot of people out that I know IRL. have to tread carefully on that one. so yay for WP!! |

Mum hates my special interests, other people hate my special interests. I am OBSESSED with games consoles and rabbits. Some people react with extreme interest and others react as if I am making jokes about nuclear war. I have been beaten up, threatened, had things lobbed at me and been called a retard because of my obsession. Tell me this... how could I be retarded if I can tell a person EVERYTHING about rabbits? It depends a lot on who you speak to. _________________ I am a Tourettey, Aspie obsessive compulsive! |
