Just FYI, very UNscientific, just my impression from reading boards, I think the diet element that the most AS find it helpful to remove is gluten. Second most common is the casien/diary. A smaller percent remove both. Soy is easy to avoid if you aren't removing diary so I really don't know how many go that route (I think the problem with soy is that it naturally chelates a mineral that the brain needs to function properly).
The work schedule change probably is affecting your son, but I understand what you are saying about "what can we do?" It's a constant struggle for us, as well. Sometimes it's just time, the child needs time to adjust. Sometimes it's a little more. We all do the best we can. Stay tuned in, keep re-evaluating your options, stay as flexible as possible. Life as a parent is all consuming, it's just the way it is. _________________ Avatar copyright DW's Studio |

I just threw away a $5 pill! I paid $150 for that bottle, and now I don't know what I'm going to do. I called his Dr back to see if we can get 18mg back, but take 2 pills instead - BUT, how much is that going to be?? 60 18mg pills!!??!! I am so stressed out, I don't know what to do. I don't think there are many people out there who can just 'eat' a $150 bottle of pills. Does anyone know if the pharmacy would take them back? Wouldn't that be nice? ACK! I don't know what to do! |
Wow....the solution to this problem seems to be simple unless I'm missing something here....
Cut the pill in half. Problem solved? |

That is what I would have said, but someone else here posted why you can't do that, something about how the drug is released and absorbed. _________________ Avatar copyright DW's Studio |

Yes, I would have tried this BUT it is an extended release pill. If you cut or chew it, all the medicine would be released and could have an ill effect on someone, especially a kiddo!
I am an RN, so I did know this much, but thanks for the suggestion... I just wish it would have been able to be done! Problem solved!
Right now my little man is not on any medication and doing just fine. I'm going to give him a while longer and see how he does. I may not turn to medication anymore. We'll see. |

Allergen free diet is the only substance based benefit to my existence.
Have this really great medicinal concept, whereby you take none and educate the ignorant fools around you about the wonders that are hearing, encouraging and defending.
Prescribe me an advocate.
Have you explained to your children what it is that they are taking? Have you read them the side effects? Hmmmmm, perhaps they would not understand, perhaps you do not fully comprehend their condition of being, or the proposed methods of allieviation in order to explain.
Concerta amoung other medication, transformed my sweet, kind, apprehensive sibling into an aggressive, overweight, dissociated, rude, bully. My mother was fed the cure line. Granted he is ADD, in reality this meant he was just a little quiet and liked being alone, distractable, got overstimulated at school and threw things around when exasperated, but he was genuinely appologetic. Not anymore.
On this basis alone I am so glad I was born female, smart and concealed my difficulties. Every time I think early intervention could have saved such exquisite greif, and many therapies could have, I stifle the thoughts and return to the photographs... Brother smiling, Brother kind and caring. Brother frowning, Brother bulshy and brain dead. Likely the same would have happened to me. _________________

Just a note on the Zoloft comments:
#1) Zoloft and Concerta are for two different conditions: Zoloft is for depression and concerta ADD ...
#2) Zoloft and Prozac are the only two anti=depressants approved for use in children. I know as I learned this from my daughter doctor. When my AS daughter fell into a deep depression and began cutting herself. She wanted to feel something This all of course lead to us finally getting a dianosis for the AS.
Zoloft was of little help for her but Prozac worked great!
ON the GAG REFLEX issue ... My 11 yr old is the same way and takes concerta. We started out my learning to swallow mini M&M's . There are still the occassional days that she can not get it down but that is the occassion not the rule.
