I have just recently joined after reading the wee article about how to respond to the "how was your day" question, and would really like to read more on the topic. I have only ever been offered counselling to deal with the obviously traumatic (!) lack of friends, not a "Dummies guide to interacting". I can't get stuff like "How are you?" - why do people ask and then not want to know? Why do we tell people to have a nice weekend when we are all weekend workers and know fine well they will be in the office at the weekend - we never say have a nice week although that is when they are off! It all goes over my head, but I have been asked to improve for something very specific that has consequences of not being able to, so I have to (shock horror) talk to people.

I also have that challenge to spelling proscopognosia (??) = inability to recognise people. It is SOOOOOO hard to chat with someone when I can't tell whether I have met them or not! When I meet a group of new people I either have to get them to sit still while I draw them or have them electronically tagged! I have no chance of recognising someone if I met them outside and see them again inside because they have taken their jacket off. How on earth do you cope with all this?

Just nice not to be alone, I am always looked upon as a bit of a freak for not feeling the overwhelming desire to drink until I have exchanged STI's with a hideous stranger and am unconscious in my own vomit, but then I am a student...

When we started this site, we meant for it to be more of a 'resources' thing in addition to the discussion forums. The articles are pretty stale....anybody want to help write more?

I have tons of ideas come to me at random. I just am horrible at writting them out.
Serious, I'll watch other people do things normal, and mentally take note of everything done, and try to learn the concept behind it;
only I can never express it in words. I wish I could help.

I don't have any advice, but I can relate. I don't really mind the "How are you doing" or "How was your day" questions, because I have just learned to say "Fine" no matter what. It has pretty much become an automatic reaction.

But this one guy at work drives me nuts with his stupid rhetorical questions. We'll pass each other in the hall and he'll say "What's up?" or worse yet "What do you know?" What kind of idiotic question is that? "What do you know?" What the hell does he expect me to say? "The capital of France is Paris?" The worst part is that, since we are passing each other in the hall, there is hardly even enough time to give a generic stock answer. I usually just say "Nothing" or "Not much" which is really an insult to me, but I have no idea what else to say. I guess I could say "A lot" but I guess I feel better being self-depricating than self-agrandising.

I'm no social guru but I think shooting him back with another question, like "How's it going?" or just changing the topic would be fine.

I'd like more of these articles too! I think the "How was your day" and "Gregarious Humans" were awesome and helpful! Really.

Of course, to make him really respect and admire you, you should do a little nod, a little wink and say "What Don't I know!" in a slightly conspiratorial manner.
heh

just kiddin

Or you can say."Many things, many things indeed" and let him wonder. sheesh, I really am a little stirrer

http://www.soyouwanna.com/ is a good site for How To articles. It has articles detailing how to do all sorts of things, from the serious to the inane.
