My dad does not understand that I am NOT shy! My parents are divorced, my Dad has a "lady friend" that he wants me to meet. I asked him "So did you tell Ladyfriend I was shy?" He said "yeah." I really hate being called shy, I hate talking to people and I just want to be left alone! Evil or Very Mad

No, that's really more asociality. Shyness is more reluctant, more suppressed.

You can't blame him for using the same term you use to describe yourself.

What reason would he have to take you seriously about not using the term shy when you are asking him if he's telling people your shy?

My friend's mom used to call the guy she was dating her "man-friend". She explained that it was more fitting than "boyfriend" for a man in his 50's . . .

But I think terms like "man-friend" and "lady-friend" sound hilariously sleazy. I guess it's because I've most often heard them used in the context of affairs, open marriages, etc., and always by people in my parents' age group.

Whenever I hear someone talking about a ladyfriend, I assume the ladyfriend is a prostitute.

I may be a little shy but mainly I just don't want to talk to everyone. I think where my shyness comes in is when I meet someone I actually do want to talk to and I freeze up.
