"Jane, you ignorant slut" is not permissible
"Jane, your opinion is ignorant/sluttish"
"Jane, your beliefs are ignorant/sluttish"
"Jane, your philosophy is ignorant/sluttish" are rude, but allowed.

if someone identifies too closely with their opinions, beliefs or philosophy that they take offense as if it is a personal attack then they might want to take a look at that.

Surely that is their problem, if they are that closely related to their beliefs is It my problem when they put them up for examination. PPR is a debating forum, people who's beliefs are that fragile should not debate them

Just to make it clear: you are agreeing with Merle, and the rest of the mods.

As Merle has just quoted, and I'll reiterate, the rules explicitly state:
Quote:
Attacking an opinion, belief or philosophy is acceptable, but attacking the person making the comments is not.

OK then, perhaps some concrete example would help, given the way I tend to think about things it is better for me to have actual examples. These are some quotes of mine from the monarchist thread, which has been quite civil thus far; please tell me if they are somehow inappropriate.

I suggest that the posters who have mentioned feudalism do not understand the historical definitions of feudalism and monarchism.

Here I essentially stated that Haliphron and DentArthurDent are ignorant on this topic. Is this permissible?

Obviously an insult, but also obviously in jest, and I am certain the target of the "insult" understood I was being facetious. Will there be a problem with this type of light-hearted sparring?

I've been looking around; I really can't find any example of serious flaming current in PPR. Confused Where exactly is the sea of flames that needs to be drowned by the Wrath of Mod?

Another reason you should distrust the idea of needing more moderation, because if you cannot find many offenders, and there is a big call for a crack-down, then it is likely full of crap.

True. My impression is, a particular fire starter has not been posting as of recent and those whom inflamed him and he in turn inflamed have died down.

Conspiracy theorists, who wander in here from time to time, are often driven away by the negative reception to their ideas.

Yeah, we PPR heads have an irritating habit of having standards of proof before we swallow outlandish theories. Come to think of it, hasn't most of the actual flaming recently been conspiracy related? Even the various Atheism vs Whatever threads haven't gotten as heated as when some half baked theories have been exposed to "peer review" Laughing.

There are a few members who like conspiracy theories. I hope they do not feel driven away. I am not always inclined to believe their theories but find them interesting none the less.

I would also like to point out that there is precedent to allow a more relaxed atmosphere in PPR, there is already the Adult forum with relaxed rules on posting subjects, so why not allow more vigorous debate on PPR,? Obviously it is serving a need among a group of the members of this site, and isn't that the purpose of this site, to support it's members? Forgive me if it's not your intention, but some of the posts by Lau and Quatermass in this thread make is seem like this impending PPR "crackdown" is more of an exercise in moderator ego boosting than a genuine attempt to improve the site for the benefit of the members. I know that complaints to the mods are private, but can we at least hear some general examples of what the problem is? Whenever I see flames being thrown around here it's between people who can both dish it out and take it, I don't see much in the way of innocent bystanders getting "hit", so what's the problem? Can some people just not stand to look at a vicious argument on their screen or something, cause that's going to happen anytime politics are in the mix. I don't have a problem with someone being upset if they came in here looking for a debate and got insulted out of the blue, but I think third party complaining, e.g. someone came in here and saw two of our regulars flaming each other, should be taken less seriously. What I don't what is mods over our shoulders all the time looking for implied insults in our words, I've seen that happen before and it can just kill a forum.

well, I do like conspiracy theories, I find these things interesting, especially the 911 ones, the more annoyed some people seem to get about it, the more interesting and amusing it gets Wink

What about racists and Islamophobes? There are a small handful of guys who will attack an ethnic or religious group on any grounds.

Racists, of course, are obvious people to discipline, but Islamophobes seem to comprise a good portion of people who object to the treatment of women, the imprisonment of people who criticize some Islamic dogma, and the rabid speech by Islamic leaders proposing violence, all in Islamic regimes. It seems to me some comment is acceptable in this area.

I enjoy it the way it is. If someone goes over-the-top with an opinion, I just follow suit.
