Greetings,

Just thought I should mention that you have a couple of users (Tim_Tex and mic) in your chat who appear to be inactive and have been there for a few days.

From experience I know this makes other people uneasy and I should also point out that given the nature of the chat (regularly making http requests to update the message area), they are wasting your bandwidth Razz

Thank you for notifying me of this; i've removed the idlers from the chatroom. Because the php script reloads the page on a regular interval, idling in our chatroom sucks bandwidth. If you want to chat, thats fine, but please don't idle in the chatroom, we don't have an unlimited supply of bandwidth.

Alex....is it possible that people just aren't being removed from list of people in the chat? Hmm. I'll take a look at it later.

Yes - I thought Tim Tex was a particularly poor conversationalist! Confused

You might want to post this over again as there's currently seven people idling in the chat. Sad

Right outside the chatroom, the following is, as of 4:23 ET on 8/5/04, wrote:

I don't think neutron189 and sepia are permalurkers, but all the others are, so I put the permalurkers in red for your convenience.

I access a weather related chatroom on a regular basis. A handful of us stay in the room for long periods of time while we are surfing, which often times is at least reading, scanning and posting at the chatrooms associated website.

Using the mIRC chat client (which I use in the chatroom I mentioned above) is great for scrolling back, and at least to go back and scan what was said while you were away from your computer. The WrongPlanet Chatroom doesn't scroll back at all. stay where you put it when scrolling back, so there isn't any reason to idle.

However, I understand the problem with idling when the chatroom is part of the site.

8/7 update:

Neutron189 is now a victim of the Permalurker disease thing! *faints* (Yes, one of those exaggerations I like to do in my posts. Typical 02-03 Ick.com Message Board thing. Lots of people did it on there back then until they all left because of NICKMyst.) Call the navy!!! ("           ")

Would it be possible to put a time-out feature on the server so after say, an hour or so of inactivity, a username gets dropped from que of online users. I think that this would be a nice feature since I sometimes forget to log out when I leave the site.

That would work for the chat, but not for when you're waiting for a new post to show up on the forums and also on another website (like I do sometimes). But JUST for the chat.
