I just upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP yesterday. I am in amazement. With the exception of the constant short outs causing the computer to abruptly shut off for no apparent reason, the computer is running much smoother then ever before. This computer has 15GB (6GB) free drive space and only 64MB RAM memory and it runs almost as good if not better then my sisters brand new 250MB RAM 80GB computer. I'm should be getting the Dell I ordered last week any day now. I could only imagine how well that would work with a fresh install of XP.
Anybody else using XP?

The thing to remember with any X-based OS is to understand that
256mb runs a smooth OS, 256mb keeps it happy. Otherwise, it is
underrammed! |

XP isn't X-based Ghosty, its based on Windows NT like Win2K. I agree with you regarding X based OS's though, 256MB seems to be the magic number.
Having said which I'm surprised you got XP running so well with 64MB RAM 10691047 - it usually needs 128MB to be reasonably functional. Good eh?  |

Yeah, using my XP drive right now, as a mater of fact. Hopefully the first thing that you did was get rid of that horrible blue themed category view, and turned off most of the UI FX that clog your rescources. (Fading pallettes, and that sort of s---) That stuff is unnecessary, and only eats up resources for the effect of looking cool. You might want to invest in a 128 MB memory stick as well.
Oh yeah, before you stick anything else on your system , get SP2, then install Firefox. this should keep your computer a bit more secure while your online. |

Pha. Get Firefox and Securgrade (Search it, It may be gone now though, I know Microsporft were pressing for it to be shut down)
Securgrade is an upgrade for FF that makes it near unbreakable. Near unusable also at first, till you get used to the aditional changes

Never knew that. I changed the theme from XP to Windows Classic and PF usage went down from 74MB to 69MB. Thanks!
As for upgrading the memory, I'm not going to bother with this computer. It shorts out too much (Snaps off suddenly without me doing anything and refuses to turn back on until I keep unplugging it and plugging it back in over and over) and I am planning on retireing it from use and storing it away as a backup. New computer that I ordered last week should be arriving any day now.

I am only using Windows 2000, I doubt XP would run smoothly with a P3 450 MHZ processor and 128 MB of RAM. |

Not with the default settings at least. At the kernel level though XP is actually more efficent than 2000. If you do an XP install and disable terminal services, fast user switching, themes and other unneeded stuff, basically trying to make it as much like 2000 as possible it does actually work just as well with better compatability with games and things like that that don't work so well on 2000.
It's easy to make a mess doing things like that if you don't know how to do it properly though so you might be better off sticking with 2000 as long as you have some kind of effective firewall (read: not rubbish like zonealarm or anything that pops up lots of "hack attempt prevented messages" a real firewall just does its job).

i don't use windows XP as I just can't stand it, the only time I do use it is on occasions at work (the usual computer i use there has windows ME on it), and if i need to do anyting to my fiancee's laptop for her, though i have tried persuading her that Linux is a lot more stable and the software is free she won't install it. I leave my guests to face the horror that is windows 98, My practically dead laptop also runs windows 98 (when it works).
I'm not a big fan of windows, i find it's more trouble than it's worth

Zone alarm is rubbish?
Im using Windows XP and not Linux because with linux it seems you have to be a real computer expert just to use it and all the things to you have to figure out and learn just to install it. Install new applications on to it. And trying to run most games onto it..... well most of the time you don't unless you can figure out how to set up some thing that emulates windows api's.
For me windows right now seems like the more trouble free option. I will be keeping an eye on linux though because I do want to see linux hack away at Microsofts market share. Theres just a few things with user friendlyness and the fact that alot of the thing on linux are not Polished. Linux is Brillent in some areas and others are just done so it works and nothing more.
I have used linux in the past and I am thinking of running Linux on my old 333mhz p2 with 128mb of ram. But as for my main computer which is a 2.4 ghz p4 im going to stick with Windows XP for now.
By the way Windows Visa is probably going to bloated to the brim.

I like ZoneAlarm... it does what it says on the tin, so to speak.
Incidentally, most stuff is fairly easy to do in Linux too, though picking up one or two basic shell commands helps - there are plenty of user friendly distros out there now *cough MEPIS cough* but gaming is still patchy I must admit. Wine is great when it works but a bit temperamental and loads of stuff doesn't run using it, not on my machine anyway. I currently dual boot WindowsXP and MEPIS, which keeps everyone in the house happy.

A computer that has to be fiddle with like that sounds like the power supply is subpar not the software. But a new computer with a new power suppy, mother board, cpu, mem hd etc sould work a whole lot better

According to me a firewall is something that sits between the computer and the internet, ie it's a difference device / computer.
My problem with zone alarm is the same as my problem with windows firewall, or bpf, or whatever the linux kernel packet filter is called: A software firewall can only ever be as secure as the operating system hosting it. If you can cause a buffer overflow in the network driver or something like that it isn't going to help. With rubbish network cards with their accompanying questionable drivers (nessacary because of the crap design of the card) this may not be entirely impossible have a look at rtl8139.c in the linux kernel sources to see what i mean. Even if you can't program all the comments insulting the design of the card should be enough |

I stopped using Zone Alarm because I couldn't network with it and it kept blocking Gaim. I now use Windows Firewall. I actually like Win98 more, but that's because I used it for 6 years and then switched to XP.
