Wow! Shocked Sounds like the school I went to in middle school and high school. I didn't think such a school existed outside of LA. Been in special ed since preschool actually - the only times I haven't been were elementary school and college (I'm in college now). I liked the school I went to back in PreK, the teachers and staff were really nice and I got along with a lot of the kids there. Unfortunately things (eventually) got kinda bleak with the school I went to in middle and high school. Practically no one who went there liked it, actually. Personally, I loved the fact I was able to make friends at that school like I never had before! However, I was also severely bullied at that school and because of how menacing some of the kids were who went there, the staff treated us like the things those kids did was ALL of our faults when clearly it wasn't! Mad

Dunno why they couldn't have just made it a school specifically for Aspies. I think there'd be less a chance of us being bullied that way. Unfortunately, there'd probably be EQUAL chances the staff there just wouldn't be able to identify our problems as well as they should have Rolling Eyes

Of course, the other disadvantage to having a school consisting entirely of Aspies is that they're mostly male, which would mean there might be trouble for those who would want to pursue a relationship with a female (I know there's Aspies like that out there...)

Wow. those are real interesting stories. I'm glad I'm not the only here who's in special ed.

I was in special ed practically my entire schooling, and am still involved with disability services at my university. I was also in the gifted programs at the same time, however. If you know how to maneuver a school district you can get them to do what you want. It takes a lot of fighting though.

They kept trying to kick me out of special ed because I was so smart and I obviously didn’t fit with the lower functioning people. In high school I had a class that was a small group of kids and a tutor. It was tutoring essentially, but I didn’t usually need any help with my classes. Instead I used it as a time to recuperate from being in noisy classrooms all day because five kids are not nearly as bad as thirty.

At least that's what it says on Wikipedia.

My reading is way above average, my spelling and hand writing are way below average.

I have the same thing. But I also have difficulties talking because I have a tendency to switch syllables and mispronounce things making communication even harder and more awkward.

I spent a couple years in "special ed." I was failing school but had a near-genius IQ. School didn't know what to do with me, so they punted me into the class.

In a way, it was good because I got more personal attention from teachers who were a hell of a lot more compassionate than some of the other teachers out there. I made more "friends" because I could identify more with the kids in "special ed" (they were society's "rejects" just like I was).

However, education catered to retardation, not my academic level. I did the toughest stuff they had and passed easily. So, I got put back into normal classes.

I was in special ed until I was in 2nd grade. In 3rd grade, I was fully mainstreamed. I did not need any help or anything. In high school, I was in all honors classes, and graduated in the Rhode Island honor society and the top 1/3 of my class.
Academics are my life. I love and am great at research, reading, writing, math and all of the academic things. I am also interested in the medical field. I am even great at life skills and have balanced a checkbook and been independent with all of my financial, medical, and other needs, since I was 13 years old. I am a very independent learner, so this is very easy for me.
My social skills and understanding other people at a personal level, and handling unpredictability without getting stressed. Now that is a different story. That is why I am on disability.
But, after all of these years, I was able to figure out that I can work in a laboratory and be a Histology Technician, because I do not have to deal with patients, work in a very quiet environment, and use all of my great academic skills.

I have been in Special Ed since I was in first grade and I hate it! I have to go to a Special Ed school until I am 21 now that I am done with High school. And I had some bad teachers! I mean really bad Special Ed teachers, that is just sad.

I spent practically most of my schooling in Special Education. I spent eight years in a Special Ed School. I spent most of years in Junior High School in Special Education even though I was gradually mainstreamed into regular classes and eventually at the end of my tenure their (what a horror show that was) I was fully into regular ed. I attended regular high school (small private religious) and was able to attend college.

they wanted to put me in special ed in elementary school, but my mom didnt let them. because i was slow at reading (hardly could, this was in 2nd or 3rd grade), my mother had my IQ measured and got me a private tutor. after that i was reading at 12th grade level Very Happy

i wish i could have special ed maths, now. Sad. my school is small and doesnt have any rights for special kids like that. and i dont actually have any diagnosis. in freshman year, we had a "core" maths class, with 3 people. it was a bit easier, and the teacher was epic and kind. i got an A in it, with struggling. Very Happy

I was in special Ed 1st - 3rd grade. Plus speech therapy. I still sometimes have trouble saying "Ch-" instead of "Sh-".
