I bought one today. Hope to have it buy Thursday. I really hope it's as cool as the reviewers say it is. Smile

Would I sound too stupid if I said I've never heard of one?

I love the smell of books, but unfortunately they are nowdays usually printed on paper that is so awful to touch... (damn environmentalists! Wink ) so I guess I'd get me one of those too. let us know how you find it!

Nope. You can find out about it here.

I would really like one of those. But there are some advantages to print books- with an electronic book, I can't flip through as well. Hopefully it has something similar to Firefox's in-page search feature.

So far I like it!

I noticed a lot of people looking at it. Many people asked questions about it. From a conversation piece it definitely does that. It made me nervous to get the attention, but I guess people are curious creatures.

It took me awhile to get used to it since I am used to reading paper books.

Usage is elegant. The previous and next page buttons are nice. They designed it so that the previous page button on the left side is slightly higher for your thumb.

Text size is changeable in the extreme, so if you have problems seeing the text in books the Kindle helps with that.

Text-to-speech is available for every book in male and female simulated voices. I was actually shocked at how realistic the voices are. Pausing at commas, pronunciation, and others linguistics work well. However after ten minutes I had to shut it off. The voice is very dronish and monotone. Needless to say if you prefer audio books Kindle’s text-to-speech feature won’t replace them.

I had lots of PDF, TXT, and DOC eBooks that I figured out how to convert to a format supported by Kindle. The first option was to email the file to my @kindle.com email. Amazon converts the file on their servers and a few minutes later it shows up in the list. The other option is to download Mobipocket Creator. I REALLY enjoy this freeware app, and prefer it over the Amazon @kindle.com conversion method. I did notice some bugs with the app such as quotes and italicized text didn’t convert. But for the most part it did an excellent job.

I bought a couple books from the Kindle store from my Kindle. Amazon uses something called whispernet that piggybacks off Sprint cell phone technology. There's no cost the use the service since the cost is built into the price of the Kindle plus books.

I wish the Kindle had a backlight so that I can use it at night. Reading in a dimly-lit room is hard, but I guess it’s no less different than reading a paper book in a dimly-lit room. Reading the Kindle in day light is really nice and surprisingly comfortable on the eyes! There’s a bit of a problem with glare but not too bad. If you wear sunglasses glare is all but eliminated.

And to answer your question Orwell yes there is a search feature available on every page just like Firefox. The search will scan all books and return results for the word or words. Then you press the button and it jumps right to that page in the book.

I can turn off the device and turn it back on and it will be on the page. If I bookmark a page and return to the listing, I can click on the book and it will return me back to the bookmarked page.

Smile

This would be another of my big concerns. If I had a Kindle, most of what I'd put on it would be PDF and I would prefer to be able to upload those directly.

You can use either methods I mentioned above. With @kindle email you simply email the pdf as an attachment. Or you plug the Kindle into an available USB port on your computer. Kindle shows up as a removable drive (like an ipod, or a usb stick). Inside the kindle drive there's a folder called Documents. After the Mobipocket Creator creates the prc file, transfer the file to the document folder. Easy peasy. Smile

I want one; when I get a post-grad job, I might buy one. It would be nice if Amazon offered some sort of extreme discount for Kindle versions of books you already purchased from Amazon in paper format; I would very much like to have certain books with me without buying them at list price (even though Kindle editions can be cheaper).
