huh? A movie about AS! I just saw the trailer of the first page here...Its not my kind of movie for sure but I got some interest to see this one due to the AS part of course.
I havent been to the cinemas for years and would have to keep track of it to not miss it . But first it would be nice to get some reviews from people of WP who have seen the full movie _________________ I am female and 35, these are My words: *be yourself and try your best*

Might be some potential for an aspie western.
The solitary stranger rides into town and...
...and spends the whole movie being a solitary stranger.
Maybe not. _________________ They murdered boys in Mississippi. They shot Medgar in the back.
Did you say that wasn't proper? Did you march out on the track?
You were quiet, just like mice. And now you say that we're not nice.
Well thank you buddy for your advice...

We need a film noir style aspie movie with a typical solitary, alienated protagonist. Asperger's goes cool and gritty. _________________ For time has imprisoned us,

| For anyone who will be in the area, this film is being screened as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival at Cineworld in Edinburgh on 27 June. I'm going. It's recommended to book ASAP though. |

"chick flick"/romantic comedy: I don't like this genre. That being said, I think that genre is an excellent way to educate the public about AS.
-It's a format the general public is comfortable with. Guy & girl, guy likes girl but has trouble expressing it, girl likes guy but is a bit hesitant. Throw in a nay-saying relative for the girl, as to get some sympathy for the relationship as a whole. Present the relationship as a bit different, but doable for both people.
The audience will want the two of the to succeed, with each other.
-Romantic comedies are (supposedly) grounded enough in reality that members of the audience feel it could happen to them (like the song "That Could Happen to Us" by Jill Philips). I think anything that makes people feel that they could know someone with AS, that AS isn't "somewhere, over there, not-my-problem", is a good thing.
-This movie could be a great way to say that we (aspies) are here. We're here! We function (to an extent)! We can fit into your(NT) life. |

They just don't get it. |
Have you even looked at the love and dating subforum? They get it more than you do. |

Yeah, I have; I don't see much in there but the usual, "woe is me", which is the same in every dating forum on the 'net. They aren't the people I'm speaking of, anyway.
Naming the disorder within the movie is simple segregation; show people with an ASD, show how they are, show how they differ and how they interact, but don't name it, as naming it is a holdover from ancient times where people had to name "blacks", "Asians", "whites", "retards", and etcetera, to give the majority an emotionally positive reaction rather than a negative one from social and cultural norms that show this behaviour as negative without a label. Without naming it, you get people showing who they are, as they aren't biased by the label that draws feelings from the majority. My second point; it's showing the disorder in the light of what normal people perceive as their relative norms--why not make a movie where an "aspie" sits in his basement all day long and pours over factual data whilst compiling lists of the same, all whilst offering nothing to society? That's far more likely and realistic than any "love story". But no, that won't make money or relate to "normal" people.
Hence, people don't get it. |

I saw this movie in full last night.
It's not a 'victim' movie.
It's OK. Not perfect, but OK. It's a careful treatment, which has been referenced through consultation with ASAN members.
It really does its best, and the ending is satisfying to everyone.
It's worth watching. A bit OTT at times, but not patronizing, by and large, at all.
Watch out for the raccoons. They made me weep buckets. |

not really my cup of tea,. but i will watch it out of interest when it comes out on dvd.
Why is it ALWAYS geeky science stuff and why are those portrayed always boys? i would have like it if the girl was the one with Asperger's...and her special interest was the Simpsons or Pokemon or the poetry of Australia or the making of puppet dolls as Poopylungstuffing does...just to diverge from the consolidation of further stereotypy.
I did like the hug bit - that is real. That lack of spontaneity is a feature in my household. _________________ animals are the safest friends to have |

| Looks good to me I will see it when it comes out. Who know's maybe it will be a good thing for people to see this and to understand what we go through at time's like when the dad in the preview doesn't want his daughter to be with him cause he is different. |

I'd really love to see a movie based on an AS person trying to make it in their chosen field - similar to The Pursuit of Happiness type movie, where they have to contend against workplace politics, their own AS related sensory problems (and that kind of thing), bullying and victimization, etc, but eventually come out on top.
Romantic comedies are all very well, but they're mainly based on making comedic entertainment out of AS quirks - I don't think they'd really hit to the heart of the autistic person's struggle for survival in a world engineered to function for a different brain type.
I'd also love to see an AS film with a female lead. _________________ Circular syncopation. |
