| It would be spiffy to see an AS version of Pursuit of Happiness. |

We should locate someone on the site whose interest is script-writing, and get them to write it. _________________ Circular syncopation. |

| I'd watch a movie like that! That is a good idea to get someone to write a "life" movie about AS. |

[hesitantly raises hand] Heck, I'd do it. Even if it's just for funsies.
I'm not much of a chick flick person, but I think I'll check this one out. |

1. I thought the biggest complaint of the aspie community that there wasn't any understanding of aspies and what makes them tick. This movie would be a start to shed some light on the subject.
2. Did you even watch American History X? |

| Tonight, I saw the showing at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. As I'm aware the film won't be released for a month's time I won't give details of plots. But as an Aspie watching the film and from the point of view of portrayal of Aspies, the film has had a damaging, harrowing emotional impact on me, one that I will need time and reflection to recover from. |

Do you care to elaborate on this? Perhaps it can be done in a way that does not reveal to much from the film.... |

it's not the portrayal of Aspies, it's a portrayal of one Aspie. A movie about corrupt cop doesn't represent the entire field of law enforcement. Granted, I haven't seen the movie, but you seem overly sensitive to a chick flick. Take it for the work of fiction that it is. _________________ Yuno DaSignacha |

| The film presents a deliberately over-extreme Asperger presentation, and although I personally know dozens of Aspies including one or two fairly extreme presentations, they are still not like Adam. There are scenes which really don't need to be there, I think Aspies don't need them to be there, that could have a damaging social impact on Aspies and how they will be portrayed to the audience. A film such as this will have quite a big influence on cultural perception as it's supposed to be quite a big film. An audience that as of now will sure know less about Asperger's and the Aspie population, than about the population of cops or about law enforcement. |

You have to remember that movies like Adam are not there for Education, they are there to create a story. Embellishment and Hyperbole are there to create tension and mood and to evoke a reaction for the audience. They are not there to inform or represent. Don't take something that isn't your personal story as personal. It'll save you a lot of grief. |

Romantic comedies are all very well, but they're mainly based on making comedic entertainment out of AS quirks - I don't think they'd really hit to the heart of the autistic person's struggle for survival in a world engineered to function for a different brain type.
I'd also love to see an AS film with a female lead. |
It isn't AS, nor is it probably catering to your desires, but Snow Cake has a female autistic woman as the main character. A guy gives her daughter a lift and ends up in a car accident, and he goes to see if she's ok. It isn't a romantic comedy, and it isn't a geeky science movie. It's just a little film showing a little bit about autism. I highly recommend it. _________________ We are the mutant race!!!! Don't look at my eyes, don't look at my face... |

| whipstitches wrote: | Oh yes... definately a little more "realistic", I think. The guy on the bench telling Adam that he needs to talk about something else is dead on!! I hate it when that happens.... I especially liked the hug scene. The girl has to tell him to hug her! That was very "real". The "he lives in another world" and " you don't have to make that sort of compromise" bit is a little over the top, however. I have been called eccentric and weird, brainy, nerdy ... no one has ever accused me of living in another world . I rather like our Aspie eccentricities!! However, I do agree that it looks like a really good film. I liked Mozart and the Whale, but there was something about it that was "off" for me. I understand that emotions need to be exaggerated a bit for the cinema, however. I don't mean to totally bash the film. |
I remember my father lamenting quite a bit about my constant monologues on various subjects as a child.
I know (beyond a reasonable doubt) that the film will be of exquisite quality.
Plus, the screenwriter seems to have a pretty good grasp on the condition. He repeats the essential truth: Every individual with Asperger syndrome is difference.
The screenwriter gives an interesting interview (he gives away a few scenes from the film, but not too many). |
