It is something which most of my 'friends' tease me for., the fact that I can't watch horror, thriller, mysteries or anything where things suddenly leap out at you,

Most people seem to be able to stay detached when watching these types of movies, seem to be able to stay within the boundaries, so to speak. However, when I watch something like that, it feels too real. Even though common sense is telling me that it is just a movie, I doesn't seem that way too me. One day I went to see an MA movie with some friends, and they showed a horror trailer. I didn't realise it was a horror until it was too late, and for several days I felt on edge after seeing it.

I just want to know if it is an aspie thing, or just me ^^;;

I can watch them without a problem, sometimes I jump in the 'jumpy' scenes (only in the cinema, not tv). But am over it straight away. I just usually find horror movies pretty boring because I can't relate to them, I much prefer any other genre. My wife who is NT is more like you in that she gets very jumpy, so not sure what that proves...

It isn't just about just being jumpy...I'm not really sure how to explain it, but it is something more intense than that Confused

I think I understant what you're saying, my wife is sort of on edge as if she's been through the experiences herself, e.g. if there's a scary old woman in a film she's looking over her shoulder for her. As if the things in the film are going to happen in real life.

I can't watch horror movies, but for the exact opposite reason that you do.

I'm too detached. Horror movies is so boring, unrealistic, and predictable that I just cannot get into it.
I remember I sat through the duration of The Grudge, and I was waiting for the 'scary part' the entire time. I was very bored, and almost falling asleep while everyone else was jumping and cowering.
When the movie ended, I was like, "That's it?" I was so disappointed, after everyone else said it was the scariest movie they had ever seen! Confused

When I was a kid I could watch horror films without much reaction. I was quite insensitive to this kind of material, for whatever reason. Nowadays I don't watch them much, but occasionally there's a good one that I'll see. When I saw portions of Silence of the Lambs and the one about Hannibal Lecter, my reaction was "Ugh. I can't watch this.", though.

I kind of can't stand a lot of horrors, my main bane is when they jump out for shock all of a suden I get embaressed that I jump so easily from when something jumps out, I even jumped in my seat in a certain scene in the latest Harry Potter film. Though I did get an interst in Alien and Predator movies, got freaked out in them though enjoyed them, I also half watched several Japanese horror movies on tv, damn scary, but I turn the volume way down and even change chanels at times. I can watch some lower scary movies though the actual ones which use the suden shocks I get too afraid watching alone, and with someone else is there I might feel embaresed over sudenly jumping.

I also find it hard to play horror video games, I tried playing Doom 3, but I kind of finaly had enough when I managed to get to hel. I find it hard to make way in Biosock though I like the story and lately I have tried Dead Space though I can mostly play for about 30 minutes to 1 hour due to nerves.

I have always had the same problem. Even as an elementary school child, I asked to sit in a different room at Halloween when the teacher read ghost stories. They just completely freaked me out.

It's not just horror, but any movie with gore. I simply cannot see them. The trailers bother me, too. Badly. I don't think it's fair to go to see a movie and to have to watch a disturbing trailer before it.

If I watch these movies, I am jumpy and have sleep problems for weeks afterwards. After seeing The Ring, I called 911 about "someone being in my attic," and then told them I was just terrified for no reason and not to come.

I can't stand horror movies, or a least I couldn't when I had your age (I've not watched anything really scary since long ago). I must say I never watch a "real" horror movie, but it's because I knew I would be too scared. I've only watched two episodes of X-files in all my life, and after them I was too scared to sleep. When I watched something scary a part of my mind keep saying "maybe it's real" and I ended up really really scared. pale
I don't know if I could watch "horror" today. I do detach myself better from what I'm watching. But I don't try and I don't see the point to watch a horror movie. Rolling Eyes
It's because I'm oversensitive to fear, it could be coming from asperger.

^^ Greetings everyone. I must say that I have viewed any horror films in a very large amount of time, however I possess a happily specific and great fear of Alien movies, such as Signs and also documentaries on this subject. ^^ I become extremely frightened I believe when such music plays and often an eerie picute shall suddenly appear on screen with an alien. ^^ Perhaps this is inherited from my happy childhood when I possessed a great fear of such matters. ^^ I believe these movies are very fun, however I am very scared of viewing them.

On the other hand, I am perhaps very detached to feelings concerning blood and gore and blood in particular. ^^
I am very sorry if this is silly of me.

It just depends on what you get used to.

If you never watched them as a child, you'll have issues.
If you have a deeply religious background where demons are considered "real", you'll have issues.

etc..

My kids, aged 4 & 8 have watched

- Gore (The Passion of the Christ)
- Zombies (Resident Evil: Apocolypse)
- Killer Robots (Terminators 1-3)
- Killer animals (Jaws)
- Gutsy Animation (Blood: The Last Vampire / Vampire Hunter D)
- Irreverant Comedy (Monty Python and the Holy Grail / Meaning of Life)
- Killer Aliens (Alien/Aliens and Predator 1 and 2, AVP 1)
- Real life idiots (Jackass)

I can think of lots more.

Plus they've had a go of playing Doom, Half-Life, Duke Nukem etc...

and what scared them the most...

The Clockwork Robots out of Doctor Who...

I can watch some. It's not that I can't stand them, it's just that I prefer comedies and indie/foreign films.

I just don't see the point in watching something that'll just make you cak your pants with fear! Horror films have never appealed to me and I've never bothered watching one because the small little parts of horrors that I have seen just didn't make me feel 'oooh I must watch that'. Quite the opposite actually! Give me a good comedy anyday! Also, I don't get why people who claim to be your friends (not speaking of anyone specifically here) would tease you for not liking a certain genre. Not everyone has the exact same tastes and it doesn't make you a wuss or anything... Confused

I find them extremely frustrating.

it seems to be endless riffs of "if you have sex, you'll die"....sheesh..Wink

Mainly, they seem like endles montages of people backing into dark rooms, and meeting their end. I always wonder why they just don't turn on every light in the place, grab the carving knives, and mix it up!...Wink

They just get on my nerves....
