I'm a little disappointed with imdb.com at the moment. On the messageboard for the recently released movie 'Adam' (which I'm sure most of you have heard about) there has been a certain poster with the handle 'GumWrapper' who has been posting many messages seething with his contempt for Aspies.
Among his posts were these comments:
"but he's still got a broken, Asperger's brain."
"Haha, you have no friends and can't get dates."
"No sex, there is no realistic way in which an aspie could trick a girl into sleeping with him."
"You must be the most miserable and sad little person. You're so bitter that the world doesn't see you as you want to be seen, while you rage against "NTs" because they don't act like you want them to. Pathetic. I am glad that you have social problems, at least that means you won't breed anymore little broken, bitter people."
"In the original ending, {*no this isn't a spoiler, just made up*} Adam falls down and scratches his arm. When tending to the wound, he discovers a glint of metal. He investigates further, and finds out that he is not a human, but instead a robot. What throughout the movie has been explained as Asperger's is actually due to Adam's status as an inhuman robot."
I alerted the site to the matter with their 'Report Abuse' button, as it clearly ran against the policy disallowing hate speech on their site. My report was rejected - twice - after which I sent them a lengthy email explaining just how GW was going beyond the normal level of abuse and promoting ignorance and bigotry toward AS amongst the general public, and could be troubling for many Aspies who may be particularly psychologically vulnerable.
I detailed exactly how GW's posts qualified as hate speech in the same manner as telling African-Americans to stop beating their spouses with fried chicken and get back to the cotton fields. I was issued an auto-reply, telling me to report it as hate speech - which, as I said, I had already done twice (and mentioned to them in the very same email). Grr.
Furthermore, it is clear from various posts that I am not the only one to have complained about GW to the site admin. GW has taunted people for having done so - so clearly IMDB hasn't done what it should and either reprimand him with a stern warning or ban him outright.

He's only looking for reactions, and you're giving him a reaction. Don't allow it to get to you, and he'll get bored and go away.
Things like that used to make me VERY angry, but by now I just don't care anymore. You and I both know that what he says isn't true, so why bother?

It's not GW that bothers me - I know there are plenty of lumps of slime like this out there, and I know they're going to post stuff like this on forums. My issue now is with IMDB.com, a major, respected website, which has allowed this to continue despite the alerts from both myself and others that the Terms Of Service were breached.
It's not me I'm concerned about. I don't conform to the stereotype of the Aspie - indeed I'm hardly recognizable as one to most people - so I know his provocative statements don't apply to me. It's others, many of whom are particularly marginalized socially, who I fear will take such comments to heart. Anxiety and depression are rife amongst Aspies, and we don't need bottom-dwellers like this poster adding this kind of fuel, on sites where it should not be welcome. |

Why should they notice your alert
That's a very common reaction to AS point of view
I get it from my family
and at any social network i post to
Even here at WP i get such responses
We are still very far from getting the most basic human rights
It will take many many years,if not decades or generations,before AS would be considered human beings
We need many more people like u who will never give up

Well, I think they ought to notice the alert because that's why they have the alert system in place - so you can make them notice stuff.
However, I have just started a topic in the Help messageboard re this matter. It's basically a re-edited and expanded version of my original post in this thread. If you're a member, feel free to lend me your support here. If you're not a member, well, I'll certainly still vouch for the site as the best place to talk movies, with a board for every film and enormous amounts of traffic. It's not like I have turned on the site over this little hiccup.

That gum wrapper is out of order if he making comments like that, but sadly I do not have any quick answers on how to deal with him.

OK, now if you check out his messageboard history (scroll down) you will find all 23 posts (so far) in 8 different threads on the 'Adam' board, hurling abuse in all directions. This is a deliberate and sustained attack, and clearly qualifies a s hate speech, IMO, according to the Wikipedia entry for 'Hate speech'. Hate speech is supposedly banned at IMDB, and the Wikipedia page is offered by IMDB as a reference for the term.
Don't worry, Woodpecker, I'm not asking for answers for how to deal with him - I'm just informing you. I also mentioned above that I started a thread on this subject in the IMDB 'Help' board (the best place I could find to make real complaints). |

| Gum wad or what ever is just you classic troll. Don't feed it and it goes away. He sitting at home just like you are, he's online as much or more then you are. Clearly he's living in a glass house and tossing stones. He ran out of puppies to kick or they put him on house arest so he's mad and is looking for someone to bully don't let it be you. |
