I'm still working on that myself, it changes each time I play. I don't like legendaries much though, so I usually don't play with them. It can be from any generation.

Legendaries can be nice. They tend to have exceptional stats.

I once got a clefable with Psychic, Ice Beam, thunderbolt, and body slam. I found I could use it to beat the entire game.
-Clefable is good to have for versatility.
-Alakasam is a pretty solid special attacker, with the bonus of recover
-Lapras is among the best water-ice
-A Nidoking or a Rhydon can be the physical sweeper. Probably Rhydon, because poison is weak against like everything.
-An Exeggecutor with Toxic, leech seed and double team. When a pokemon has toxic and leech seed, leech seed is just as powerful as toxic. Add double team and consider that leech seed will be enough to fully heal exeggutor, and you've got one annoying and deadly pokemon on your hands
-Charazard, for slashing and flamethrowering. Not to mention using fly on the world map.

I don't like using legenairies either, feels like I am cheating if I do, and it is so much more satasfying when using a team you raised.

-Gliscor ground and flying so it is imune to ground and electric attacks, and teaching earthquake is good
-Weavile has very high attack, night slash can be devastating
-Charizard one of my favirouts since begining good for fly
-Gengar high special attack, levitate ability and hyposis
-Gardevoir good special attack, and hynosis
-Crobat like to use confuse ray and fly so your opponent has less chance to hit and hurt itself

I only use Rayquazas, which knows many different element attacks with stats maxed out. in Pokemon Emerald. My current Firered Team is

Lvl 100; Rayquaza

Lvl 100; Groudon

Lvl 100; Kyogre

Lvl 100; Articuno

Lvl 100; Zapdos

Lvl 100; Moltres

My favorite style of team is definitely a pure offense team. This is one I found on Smogon's RMT archive, and I like it because it doesn't use any legendaries (It REALLY annoys me when a team with a legendary Pokemon battles against a team with the same Pokemon).

Gyarados Adamant (+Atk, -S.Atk)
4HP 252ATK 252SPD
@Life Orb
-Waterfall
-Stone Edge
-Taunt
-Earthquake

Tyranitar Modest (+S.Atk, -Atk)
252HP 180S.ATK 76SPD
@Leftovers
-Substitute
-Dark Pulse
-Flamethrower
-Ice Beam

Scizor Adamant (+Atk, -S.Atk)
108HP 252ATK 98DEF 52SPD
@Choice Band
-U-Turn
-Bullet Punch
-Superpower
-Pursuit

If I was using this in-game, I would go with X-Scissor over Pursuit. In-game, pursuit is one of the most useless moves: the AI NEVER switches, even when they're locked into say, an Earthquake against a Flying-type Pokemon.

Salamence Naive (+Spd, -S.Def)
16ATK 240S.ATK 252 SPD
@Life Orb
-Draco Meteor
-Flamethrower/Fire Blast
-Earthquake
-Outrage

Infernape Rash (+S.Atk, -S.Def)
@Life Orb
24 ATK 252S.ATK 232 SPD
-Overheat
-Close Combat
-Grass Knot
-Hidden Power [Ice]

Flygon Adamant (+Atk, -S.Atk)
80HP 252ATK 172 SPD
@Choice Scarf
-U-Turn
-Earthquake
-Outrage
-Fire Punch

Glad I'm not the only one. I have experimented with legendaries, and sometimes if I have a weak team I'll use one legendary (I'm planning on using Moltres this time because I'm really weak in fire unless Flareon actually gets some good fire attacks soon), but I find 6 is a little unfair.
Gardevoir is my favourite pokemon ever Very Happy Psychics are my favourite and she's really pretty (I know that shouldn't be a factor Razz Oh well Very Happy)

Though you can also get male Gardevoir so it can be kind of confusing. But they did create a male only alternate version called Gallade, my brother quite likes it. I usualy get Ralts, as soon as posible in the games.

Here's a set of six Pokémon that work well together and fit my style of team.

I like the Pokemon nobody uses. Status effects hurt no matter what.

Also, the singing Khangaskahn I pal parked in from XD: Gale of Darkness would like to lull you to sleep, then focus punch you in the nose and/or crotchal region.

But doesnt that have no heart, it is quite satasfying to use something more unique and you raised yourself, where is the chalenge otherwise. Might sound a bit lame but I like to use some pokemon that I think I might use if I was in that world, I doubt I would have or use many legendaries.

The problem with that team: you KO a Pokemon, someone switches in a Weavile. Six Ice Shards, and you lose.
