There's an even better student discount on Ubuntu. _________________ WAR IS PEACE

Actually, Ubuntu isn't free... To get the first installation of it running, you need to use a CD or USB device. A CD costs about 10p (probably WAY less to make) Then there is the cost of the electricity to power your computer, and other bills on this line. But I hope you get the overall picture.
So, I suppose the point of this post is to say Ubuntu isn't free, but comes with a larger discount as compared to that offered by many companies such as Microsoft.
Just think how many CD's you can make with the Ubuntu distribution just to even ONE copy of Windows Seven the cheapest version (probably a meagre 32bit) |

You can have Canonical mail you a free CD. They'll even pay the postage. _________________ WAR IS PEACE

That is misleading! The discount isn't restricted to students. |

arr, I actually meant Ubuntu is free for all, not just students. My bad.
btw if you are student, all server versions of Windows are free on DreamSpark.
(2003 and 2008 are 32-bit only, 2008 R2 is 64-bit only) |

And I have heard reports that Windows Server makes a decent desktop OS. _________________ WAR IS PEACE

Absolutely, the server version is usually smoother than the corresponding consumer version.
The only down side is that some programs simply refuse to run if they detected it's running on server OS. |

Canonical is losing money on Ubuntu. It's only still going because Shuttleworth is fueling it with his personal fortune. _________________ WAR IS PEACE
