I only recently heard of the phenomenon of roommates in a dorm of a university putting a sock on the door if they are boinking someone. THis means the other roommate has to go somewhere else for an indeterminate period of time.

When I first heard of this, it infuriated me greatly. I am lucky I never went to a college that had dorms, so I never ran into this, but my feelings are this is very inconsiderate for a person to take up a room that doesn't belong to them but belongs to the school and they have no right keeping the other person out of the room, and I do not care what it is they are doing. I would be like, no roommates, plz. It's like, NO, I refuse to be inconvenienced in this way.

Or get me a roommate that's totally asexual....

I have been told it is fairly universal across the world, especially USA/Canada...but I guess it depends.

I haven't heard of a sock but on "You, Me, and Dupree" I remember Dupree putting a tie on the door knob to signal that he was "occupied".

I agree, its your room after all. No reason for you to stay out. They can arrange an alternative for the bonking.

well, I am not sure I want to go into the room with boinking going on. Rolling Eyes

But the 'sock on the doorknob' isn't arbitrary, it is usually a pre arranged signal between roomies. I mean, if you came back to your room and all of a sudden there was this sock on the knob and you hadn't discussed this with your roomie, then they get what they deserve for you to just walk right on in with half the people on the floor following you in! Very Happy

There was an article a few months ago about some universities actually forbidding people from doing this under risk of being expelled, simply because it's pretty effing rude to your roommate. I believe they called it being "sexiled" in it.

Yeah I heard it was called 'sexiled'. The people I learned it from seemed to think that it was necessary to have sex in the dorm and thus the sock on the door thing.

Me, I'd ban double occupancy in dorms. Single occupancy only. Then if someone wants to boink, nobody else is inconvenienced.

This type of signaling never struck me as a problem. The deal with my roommates was generally "one hour and I get to bang on the door and come in". Rarely necessary, most people were good about removing the tie in a timely fashion.

Just go right in as they knew what they were getting into by living in a dorm They should understand that the dorm room is shared and it is not their own room. They should get a hotel room instead of do it in the dorm.

People have sex in college Shebakoby, don't be such a prude, besides what does it matter if you have never been to a dorm, or college.

Generally speaking, this is an agreed-upon signal between the two roommates that both agree to abide by (ie it goes both ways). At my university, the rule is no overnight guests without prior permission/approval from your roommate, and the roommate pairing survey asked about our general feelings on permitting a roommate to have "guests" over (ranging from "Never" to "Anytime") and it was understood based on your response that this implies you would give your roommate some space when they had someone over, under the understanding that they would give the same same consideration to you.

Problem is this is a hell of a lot more expensive. College costs enough as it is.

This seems pretty reasonable to me...

Just because I might not be getting any, I'm not going to begrudge my roomie. I'm glad someone is getting laid!
