I had a pretty bad meltdown at work today over something minor and not work related. Fortinatlay the people that saw it and got the brunt of it are also good friends and understood. I did say I was sorry and they accepted. This got me thinking thta maybe I do need some kind of meds to keep that type of thing in check. I don't have meltdowns often, but when i do I go into it full force.
My questions is what kind of meds do you think would be good to help my moods, meltdowns and my AS? I also do not want to take anything addictive. I am also taking crestor for my cholesterol and Lantus insilin for my dietbates. The new stuff should not have a bad reaction to those. One other concern I have is I don't want to start taking something having it not work then having to go on something else. I would feel too much like a experement that way. |

Its a difficult thing and your best off asking a psychiatrist.
Aspies can sometimes react in different ways to meds than what people are supposed to, for example I get psychotic symptoms if I take SSRIs (prozac and seroxat). I was on Largactil (clorpromazine) for a few years in my teens and that was quite good as its a strong sedative and made me very chilled out but it made me too lazy.
Now I try to take vitamin B12 which has been shown to be very beneficial to moods for autistic people and try to stick to the gluten and casein free diet. Both has helped me a lot but I still have a lot of downs.
Im a bit frightened to try other meds because of gettign psychotic symptoms on SSRIs but the psychiatrist might know some new meds that are better without those risks. |

I would ask your doctor and also consult a pharmacist. The doctor that prescribed a combination of Prozac and Wellbutrin for me for my ADD had never heard of the contraindication that made me want to walk around slapping people but the pharmacist knew. _________________ eat sleep read repeat |

Well, it is good to consider your options. There are many to look at:
| Quote: | SSRI: Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor
Antidepressant medications, including Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and many others fall into this category. Anecdotally, I do not hear these medications being very successful with those on the spectrum - unless there is specific depression that is co-existing with the spectrum condition.
Tricyclic Antidepressants
This family includes nortriptyline and amitriptyline; side effects are generally less than an SSRI, but limited efficacy.
Anti-anxiety Agents
These have been the most helpful to me, but require attention as they do pose a risk for addiction. Medications in this category would include xanax/alprazolam, valium, and a good number of others.
Anti-psychotic Medications
These are medications, often being used for a secondary purpose (off-label) to treat attendant issues with those on the spectrum. Not very familiar with this group - not a high risk for addiction, but can grow to depend on these meds.
Other Medications
One that came to mind, given your situation, might be a beta-blocker. These medications reduce blood pressure, and in some cases reduce the effects of adrenaline in your system. The side effect, in this case, is the desire effect - preventing the person from getting upset or agitated. |
Just a few to consider and research, and your doctor will have other options as well, I'm sure. But keep in mind, and I know you don't want to hear this part... there is no way that you will be assured of getting the right medication at the right dose on the first try. You -will- go through a process of trying one before changing and starting another. After going through over 20, I've called a moritorium on further experimenting with myself for now - we've found a couple medications that are helpful at a minimal dosage.
