hi all,

i thought it might be an idea to put up a beacon for WP'ers in south east queensland and for those that are visiting the region. maybe this post could be made into a sticky or be placed somewhere more appropriate, i am not sure... WP does not really have a "by region" zone (Mods, this might be a good thing also).

to state my purpose; as difficult as it can be to socialise, i am thinking it would be good to get to know people that may share similarities while at the same time posses unique character, have fascinating interests or talent, or (most importantly) are just decent human beings that operate with no hidden agenda.

my posts at the following locations sum a few things up and, ironically, include information that i had previously trimmed from my getting to know you thread;

http://www.wrongplanet.net/posts5906-start2175.html

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postxf67764-0-255.html

if you have any questions, comments, would like to meet some other WP'ers, or contribute to organising a meet please do not hesitate.

thank you :D

*edited for detail.

I'm a mod, and doing it by region (as in one forum per region) might be impractical.

That being said, I'll consider stickying this, as I live on the Gold Coast, and am mildly interested.

I think I've posted on 20 topics about is there anyone else in Brisbane..I had an old membership too which I think this is my latest one.

Here I am, I'm on the Northside, near Enoggera.

The most popular and central meeting place where I've met Aspies in the past was at South Bank, so that is an idea if people want to meet up. Generally I can meet anywhere that's on the train line, and the same for people I've met in the past.

Utterly Brilliant tektek !
:wtg:

Me and tektek have already agreed to meet at a location to be agreed on in the future!

I am enthusiastic about meeting WPers,
but be warned,
I am bipolar,
and my enthusiasm skyrockets
and then drops to the ground
so be warned, get in quick!
:D :(

:o 8O

That's the most enthusiastic I've ever seen you express your self !

If you would like, how about a game of Air-Hockey at the games arcade
outside the cinema at Australia Fair?

I will spot you a million points, because,
to be honest, I am freaking awesome! :)

(although, to be honest,
I've been wrong before.)

Hmmm, I'll be up Brisbane way sometime in February, attending the Soundwave music festival and staying at my brothers new house in Nudgee.
If there is a meetup happening then, I might think about going.

^ I will meet you, if you like, blue_bean. :)

tektek, that's a good idea about adding information about ourselves,
so this is a bit about me :

My real name is Matthew, I was born in New Zealand and moved to the Gold Coast
in 1981 (after the divorce :( ) when I was 13.
I was quiet and shy for most of my life  (obviously)
but have really become more outgoing and engaging and personable from about 35 onwards. (Life really does start at 40, especially for aspies :D )

I have had 2 major relationships in my life, both wonderfully amazing and intensely
loving, but ended within a year, followed by long periods of heartbreak and confusion,
self-doubt and self-imposed isolation. Again, typical aspy.

I am a Nursery owner and manager, not through my own initiative,
but in partnership with my brother, who thinks big and is ambitious and determined.
I love my job, I love plants and their role and relationship with the insects and animals that depend on them in Australia's amazing ecology! :D
I study plants continuously, partly in an effort to increase my propagating skills
but mostly because my anxiety forces me to focus on anything that... you guys know what it's like.

I love Australia, it's like a big zoo to me. :D
I spend my free time exploring the bush and searching for 'treasures'
-flowers, plants, seeds ,insects, critters.
I went up to Mt Coo-tha Botanic Gardens yesterday, It was brilliant! :D
I found a Turtle! Woot! If i had remembered in the moment, I would have got my friend to take a picture of me holding it. It could have been my first picture posted on WP,
I have been procrastinative and shy about photo's so far,
hopefully I'll change that soon! 8)

My main obsession, before plants, and still, is escapist fantasy,
particularly Sci-Fi ! :D :D :D

I think 'fantasy' feeds my fitness and training regimen too.
I discovered Yoga about 10 years ago, after the years of running, swimming and Martial Arts ruined my body. I trained TOO hard, on my own, without supervision, out of books.
I practice Yoga asana's daily, I have to because my back complains mightily at work
when I am lifting trays of plants around all day.
I have also researched Yoga's effects physiologically, it's History and Philosophy, intensely.
I consider it the most perfect training technique for the human body ever devised.
It is comprehensive in it's improvement to every bodily system.
It strengthens, massages, tones and stretches bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and internal organs.
It is gentle yet strenuous.
It gives me the energy and freedom to live voraciously!

:bounce: :rambo: :bounce:  :bounce: :ninja: :bounce: :D :bounce:

Given all that, I also smoke and drink!
Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! :wall:
I think that's tied up with my 'routine' issues. :(

I am a joker and love to laugh!

I am sweet natured, sympathetic, joyful, honest, thoughtful and completely non-aggressive, at my best.
At my worst, I am impatient, arrogant, angry, evasive, morbid and desultory,
but I would never express this in public unless I was pushed into a melt-down.
I would run away first.

WP has really made a huge difference to my life, it helped enormously me through the worst times immediately after my dx at 39, when I had a nervous breakdown
and I treasure every aspy here as a similar soul struggling with the added intricacies that life with Aspergers Sydrome imposes on us all.

Having it emphasized that we're not not defective, just different is, the single most important message that WP gives us.

I've made and met some wonderful friends here
and will probably keep contributing here for the rest of my life! :D

Phew, That will do for now!
Hope I didn't bore you all.
Oh no I've said too much, haven't said enough...

^^ that's quite a post syzygyish :thumleft:

hi emc2, flaming shorts, and blue_bean (waves)

i am on the south side of brisbane.

hopefully this thread will generate some social contact amongst fellow WP'ers for this region, it wouldn't be such a bad thing to put faces to names :).

i understand how difficult meeting and being social with new people can be, and am mindful of the anxiety that this can generate.

i am also mindful of the fact that while we may share a common or similar diagnosis (professional or self assessed) or be partnered to or caring for someone on the autism spectrum it does not immediately make us bff (best friends forever)... indeed there is some possibility of not getting along - we are all unique and those of us that are on the spectrum can be somewhat focused. hehe.

all that said, interaction here is appreciated and i look forward to saying hello in person if the opportunity is made available.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, I'd be interesetd in anything social. I find it a struggle myself to do anything social, generally too quiet. It'll be an effort but I'd attend something if it's reasonably close to public transport.

I have added AspergerCH75 on my Facebook,
anyone else local on Facebook, you are welcome to PM me here.

I don't like adding a lot of people though, I notice some Aspies have something like 300-1200 FB friends!!

I have no idea how you all think you can meet, and at South Bank or in the city for that matter.

You're all magical social people. :P

I'm in the area of operations, but I'll pass.

I actually would like to see something go ahead, I'm a person who needs to socialise even if it does take the extra effort. It might actually bring me out of my shell a bit if I was with like minded people.

We had a couple of groups meeting in Brisbane for a while, kind of through the local support group.

It ended up being we had one lot who would prefer to always meet in the same spot, same time, same day (iykwim);

Then the others who would prefer variety and not so fussed.

But it can be done.
