hi all,
navigating WP via the inbuilt safari browser is OK, but a little clunky. i would be happy to pay a dollar or three for a specific, streamlined, application. i do understand that viability depends on uptake and time spent for development - and that final price would be affected by this.
what do you think? would you be interested in a WrongPlanet.net iPhone or iPod touch App?
please answer the poll and feel free to comment.
thanks.

alex, is this something that you have thought about? is this something in development?
thanks. _________________ "see without looking, hear without listening, breathe without asking" - W.H Auden |

It's a good idea. Those with iPod Touch or iPhone who are willing to pay will be able to access WP on the go. Those who don't, there's always the PC. We could put the proceeds towards that new server.
Question is, what exactly do we want on the app? I would think an RSS news feed for autism-related news would be a good idea, plus a link to acces the forums by mobile. That's really all I can think of... _________________ Do the impossible, see the invisible,

I love the idea of having the iPhone app version of it, it would save me from having to do heavy scrolling or the very long waiting which it unfortunelately does on my iPod Touch thats why im all the time unable to join the off the wall topic, unless im on the computer _________________ After the love has gone, what used to be right is wrong, can love that is lost can be found.

qft. I like mobile safari because it gives me the full web experience.
Mobile apps for places like the New York Times seem pointless to me and so do their mobile optimized web apps.
The only reason I can see for this app would be to let people who use the iTunes store potentially find out about WP through the app. That's why I would want the app to be free. But I do want wp to have an app because of the iTunes store possibly bringing more traffic to Wrong Planet. |

I'd pay for the app if my telco allows me to buy and if the app isn't free.

I agree totally on this. But developing a stand alone WP app will not be a profitable venture because there isn't the volume of people with iPhones or iPod touches that would justify the expense of development.
However....
There is already an awesome app for forums - it's called TapaTalk. http://www.tapatalk.com/
Apparently the forum has to be based on vBulletin or phpBB for TapaTalk to work - I don't know if WP is based on these forum formats or not. But if it is then Alex would just need to install a free download on the server and we'd all be right to go.
I use TapaTalk to browse another forum and find it fantastic. I was going to post a topic to suggest WP go down this path but you beat me to it.
Assuming WP can work with this then it also gives WP more exposure to those that may not have found it otherwise. |
