HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Students said they signed a petition and complained to no avail about the classroom conduct of an Alabama professor accused of killing three colleagues and wounding three others in a shooting rampage at a faculty meeting.

The students upset with biology professor Amy Bishop told The Associated Press they went to University of Alabama in Huntsville administrators at least three times a year ago, complaining that she was ineffective in the classroom and had odd, unsettling ways.

The students said Bishop never made eye contact during conversations, taught by reading out of a textbook and made frequent references to Harvard University, her beloved alma mater.

"We could tell something was off, that she was not like other teachers," said nursing student Caitlin Phillips.

In March, 2002, Bishop walked into an International House of Pancakes in Peabody with her family, asked for a booster seat for one of her children, and learned the last seat had gone to another mother.

Bishop, according to a police report, strode over to the other woman, demanded the seat and launched into a profanity-laced rant.

When the woman would not give the seat up, Bishop punched her in the head, all the while yelling “I am Dr. Amy Bishop.”

Bishop received probation and prosecutors recommended that she be sent to anger management classes, though it is unclear from court documents whether a judge ever sent her there.

The woman, identified in court documents as Michelle Gjika, declined to comment, saying only “It’s not something I want to relive.”

Who is this woman? topic

From what I have read, I believe she is a narcissist. Her lack of eye contact is more like antisocial, rather than nonsocial. There is a lack of respect, rather than not understanding it.

Very opportunistic, and sociopathic.

I agree, I'm going with narcissist or sociopath on this one. Plus, it would appear she blew her brother away in front of her Mom and then waltzed off like it never happened and continued on with her life. Then again... sociopaths are usually much better at charming and blending in. ? Who knows.

Agreed, that's something other than autism. Get the ol' girl a monocle and a top hat.

I don't believe she's a narcissist. Narcissit's are normally charming, while secretly being manipulative. The violence and self important attitude doesn't seem to point to autism, but it's possible she could have it. Maybe AS. It seems to me that she's schizophrenic. Lack of eye contact, erratic behavior, grandiose, and repeating others words would fit schizophrenia. She probably also has a mood disorder.

Not at all.

They aired on the news something she said when she was being loaded into the police car; she said it didn't happen, and when asked about all the people that were dead, she said they were still alive.

Her perception of reality seems to be really messed up, which leads me to believe that she has schizophrenia or some related disorder.

Sounds like sociopathy or something else. Not autism. She's definitely got some narcissistic traits going on but she seems to understand perfectly well that her behavior is abnormal. That murder was premeditated--she brought a gun into the meeting, didn't she? That's not normal. That's not normal for autistics either.

Okay, first off, I think there's probably a reason Dr. Podila "blew off" Phillips' complaints about Bishop -- she sounds like a student who performed poorly and is resentful of the professor rather than blaming herself. If they want to find out what most students thought of her, they need to take a look at the student assessments that most universities perform each semester, where the students anonymously rate a professor's class. This isn't journalism, it's just gossip-mongering.

Second, no, she doesn't sound autistic. She has some kind of disorder, but it's likely she's just a sociopath.

Sounds like she's just crazy.

I think these "Are so-and-so autistic?" threads are ridiculous.

She's definitely not austic. I think she is a socipath. She proably has something like schizophrenia or other disorder mixed in with narcissist disorder. Her mental illness most likely started in childhood and just kept building up untill the recent shooting.

I dunno if there's enough information to determine what she had. Though the lack of eye contact is a common Asperger trait. I'm sure this lady had records and records of mental health issues that havent even been released to the public yet.

Good LORD!! ! All the terms are soooo confusing! Narcissist, sociopath, autistic, how does one separate all of them and then some of them mix....it's hard to make a diagnosis! Co-morbid states! If I were a psychiatrist, I'd have to fling myself out of a 32 nd floor window!

 That's sadly true. This is why I hate psychology classes so much...because it's ridiculous to teach people about the mind when not even the psychiatrists can ever seem to get it right!

am no shrink, not qualified to offer conjecture. however, her reported "odd mannerisms" in class reminds me of ted kaczynski's reported classroom behavior- he would teach the entire class-hour with his back to the students, rapidly scribbling equations on a blackboard with a sotto-voce running commentary. anybody out there know what was ailing mr. kaczynski?

Schizophrenia, I think that's what they said. It sounds like Amy Bishop had schizo with a huge helping of narcissism.
