I am the parent of a 22 year old with Aspergers. I am at my wits end as far as how I can help him. He goes to college part time which is great but doesn't leave the house otherwise. I worry about his future, how he'll support himself, how he will find his way in the world...
Anyone?

I would welcome any kind of discussion from someone who has been there as a parent or a young adult coming to terms with aspergers..
Thank you for responding.

Hi, I wrote but the connection was reset while it was loading. Are you concerned about his lack of socialization or his self help skills?

p.s. sorry about other thread-I thought I was being challenged

Well, before any practical advice can be given the important question is, what are you concerned about specifically? Is your son incapable of making his own meals and you worry about him starving? Or is there any indication that he is likely to get fired? What exactly are you worried about?

Hi. I'm not a parent but I'm in something of the same boat he is going to college part time and liing at home. Depending on how high functioning he is I'd recommend him getting a job. He'd have his own source of income and I learned far more working in retail than I ever did going to school, about socalizing life skills and everything else.

If he is going to college, he is atleast thinking about his future. He might be content with not socializing. Being around other people at school might be his limit, as far as socialization goes. It might be good for him to get a job.

What is he studying? Is it something with which he will be able to earn a living? If so, then I'm confused about why you are worrying? If not - ok, if he's studying archaic pottery and has no job skills, then I'd be worried.

When my daughter was in community college, part of her aid package was a work-study job. 12 hours a week. It was better for her than any class she's ever taken.
