|

Just wondering if anyone else here has difficulty with stairs and escalators, in particular going down them. I find I have a lot of trouble trying to work out exactly where the step is. I can see it, I just can't work out where it is in relation to me, if that makes any sense. To go down stairs I usually have to grip tightly onto the railing and almost inch my way down. Even stairs I have gone down many times, I still have to take them very slowly and concentrate intently on what I'm doing.
With down escalators I have a lot of trouble getting on trying to work out where the "step" is so I don't land on the join. I remember having a meltdown as a small kid whilst out shopping with my Nanna because she was trying to get me to go on the escalator and it scared the living daylights out of me cause I couldn't work out how to get on. Even today, I avoid them if there is any other way I can get down.
Does anyone else have these problems? |

Yes, I completely relate. Even with walking up stairs.
I'm also a bit nervous on escalators. I usually don't walk down until I know where the step is. I don't mind those ones without steps. I remember as a kid I would jump off because I didn't like that bump feeling when you got off. Or perhaps my brother told me I 'll be sucked up if I don't walk off fast enough.
I almost fell over backwards when I trip on an untied shoelace. It took me awhile to get back on an escalator after that.
I prefer taking the stairs whenever available. _________________ My autism blog - http://latedx.wordpress.com

| when i was a toddler, i had massive difficulty with escalators. it wasn't until i was in my teens that i can use them properly (without the risk of stepping on and off them at the wrong time). i also find walking down the stairs/steps a little scary and will always have to hold on tight onto the bannister. i only just found out that on top of Asperger, i also have dyspraxia which may explain my difficulties with movements/balance. |

I have similar difficulties. I was 19-ish before I had mastered escalators, and even now I'm insecure with them. Stairs make me lose my sense of where my lower legs and feet are; particularly walking up them. _________________ Music Theory 101: Cadences.

Yes but only now with escalators.
I'm always very nervous when going down escalators that if I can I look for a different alternative. I can't walk down escalators, I just don't feel safe and when I go to the end I jump off.
I have to hold on tight to the banister so I have some sort of control and safety. |

I'm the same way. I always get very anxious when going (especially up) escalators because I'm always afraid I'm going to fall. When it comes to steps, even the steps in my house, that I walk up & down all day long, scare me. Just hours ago, I nearly fell down the steps because it's as if I couldn't "see" or "tell" where the step was, even though I saw it right in front of me. (Hard to explain .) I feel like an old lady when walking up or down steps because I'm always grasping onto the railing, when others my age are just speeding up & down them like they're nothing. It's always been that way. _________________ “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” _Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) |

I usually fine with stairs, provided I'm looking down at where I put my feet. With escalators, I sometimes have trouble working out the timing to get on and off, end up on a joint and have to quickly move, or occassionally I end up tripping. I think I must look a bit strange when moving between levels in public |

Oh gods, my whole life...growing up my mother would tell me I was the only person she knew who could trip going up stairs.
Still a problem, and timely topic, as I tripped down 3 steps this morning. |

| I never had an issue with them and I have always loved them. I liked going for a ride. I also like going on them like if the stairs are going down, I get on it at the top and go down a little and then I run back up trying to get back to the surface. I find it so much fun. I used to do it at work when I worked swing shift but I got caught by the security one time and he asked me to not do it. |

I have to hold on to the rails when going down stairs because when I was child at school. Someone used to push me down stairs, and I had to hold on to rails ever since. I do not like escalators much as I always used to be a bit frightened of them when I was a child. I have to get my timings right and also hold on to the rails to keep my balance as well. |

getting on and off bothers me still. Once I'm halfway up, I'm ok on escalators.
Stairs are a gray area for me. Some days I'm fine, some days it's as if I've never used stairs before. Sometimes I don't lift my feet up high enough so I trip or going down I slide my feet a bit so sometimes I will slide down three steps causing me to clamp onto the railings to escape a bottom injury. _________________ If you eat two skittles at once, do you taste a double rainbow? |

My husband used to tease me about having to look at my feet when I went up or down stairs. Of course, now we know why I have to do that.
I just fell down the stairs at home during spring break last week. Fortunately, it was only the last three steps and not the entire flight. Had a bruised butt, but that was all.
At school and in my apt., I try to take elevators when I have my backpack on, am carrying a cup of coffee, have dress shoes on, etc. I am in very good physical condition and people probably wonder why I am being so "lazy," but I don't want to fall. |

Getting on an escalator up or down is really awkward for me, stairs not so much because I've had a lot more practice and once I've gone down the first one the rest are automatic. _________________ "I feel like a stranger in my own life" |
