I was bored so I made this chart thing explaining my theory on the connection between Charmander and Cubone.

EDIT: Also It is said (not proven) in Charmanders pokedex entry that a Charmander dies if its flame ever goes out. Well maybe that is because when a Charmanders flame usually goes out he is no longer able to protect himself due to him/her no longer being able to use fire type moves therefore more vulnerable to other dangerous Pokemon. If the Charmander was able to gain a way to fight and defend itself it could survive.

Just think about it.

Good theory except that if a Charmander's tail flame goes out it dies.

I believe that a Cubone is a baby Kangaskhan whose mother died and it wears it's mother's remains.

Just edited the original message read that. And I have always liked the Cubone idea but I always thought my Charmander one made a little more sense as the skull looks more like a Charizards head than a Kangaskhan.

I think the Poke'mon developers sort of wanted it to be an unsolved mystery due to the fact that if you raise a baby Cubone from an egg the mother is unaffected.

Some have said that missingno also points to it being a Kanaskhan due to it evolving into one.

The Charmander does make sense too.

True that could be it.

Charmander has 3 toenails
Cubone has 1 toenail
baby Kazakhstan (LOL) has 1 toenail.

So either Charmander goes crazy and cuts off 2/3s of it's toes or Kangaskhan makes more sense.

It could've been a self mutilation practice in order to further separate himself from other Charmanders.

I know. After I read it I wanted to just sit there for an hour and try to sort that out.

Cubone could look like an prehistoric form of Charmander, especially since the skull does look like a Charizard's skull. It also shares features with Kangaskhan (the spikes), however Cubone is brown whereas baby Kangaskhan is blue (his mother is a diffrent shade of brown) and Charmander is orange.

Baby Kangaskhan has two toes, his mother had three toes.

Neither Charmander nor Kangaskhan are ground types and cubone has an evolutionary line (it would not be logical to see a charmander evolve into something else than a charmander though one could argue that the skull could change the type and evolutionary line of the pokemon).

I do not think it was supposed to be related to another pokemon, it was probably just a prehistoric pokemon and they tried to find a mysterious description to justify the skull.
They may have thought about it in the past but now Cubone is clearly a different specie (or they could have claimed that female cubone would evolve into Kangaskhan while male Cubone would evolve into Marowak).

EDIT : Many Pokemon look alike.

It is possible that those pokemon are closely related. But in terms of the real world, it looks like one was modeled after the other.

This blew my mind as much as the "Ferris Bueller 'Fight Club" Theory" and "A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope "

Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle...but, because crowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to a Pokémon Center in time and the Raticate passed away. Mere moments after he became Indigo League champion, he was defeated...by you. Although he fulfilled his promise to his fallen Pokémon, it was only for a painfully brief instant. In the end, your rival is scolded by his grandfather while you receive the professor's praise. During the course of the game, you steal your rival's innocence, crush his dreams, and ultimately snatch away the love of his own grandfather. Oh, and by the way, your rival doesn't have any parents. He's an orphan.
