My 6 year old son was playing his Nintendo DS yesterday and received a small static shock to his thumb and ever since has been holding his thumb straight out hitchhiker style. He freaks out if anyone touches it, saying it still hurts. I had to send a note ti his teacher just giving her a heads up in case it interferes with his activities today. Something similar happened after a water gun battle a few weeks ago. He was accidentally hit in the eye with a small stream of water (not comfortable, I'm sure) and wouldn't open his eye for about a day and a half. If anyone has an insight into this please let me know. Thanks in advance....

We run into this as well, and my son is 10. It seems to be more of an issue for him when there is an emotional context (e.g. something unexpected, or something that happened in the middle of an argument) My opinion: my son has kind of an on/off switch for pain rather than the graduated degrees that most people have, and I think if there's any other information added on top of that, it overloads him and causes him to hyperfocus on the injury, often for a day or two.

Sadly, I don't have the answer you're looking for as to what to do - for us, sometimes unnecessary and gratuitous use of band-aids helps, but I don't know that this is any better than just letting him do whatever else he comes up with to handle it.
