I really hate the word 'aspie'

it really pisses me off. it sounds too cute. i feel like an african american and the n word.

I'm with you on hating it and for the same reason. It sounds to cute and/or like a breed of dog.

When I hear it, I can only image some old, wealthy, white woman telling her friends at church, "I have just the sweetest little Aspie at home... and he's been such a good boy... He uses his pee pads and doesn't go on the floor anymore."

I use "Aspergian" in situations in which just using "autistic" might be confusing or mileading.

I totally agree. People need to knock it off with that word.

Me too. Mostly because I can't stand the use of "i" right after "p". I hate certain letter combinations..

Aspergian sounds like a sect for some reasons. Aspie sounds like a vacuum cleaner in my country therefore I do not like it. I use it because I do not like using "Asperger" to talk about people, it's the name of the condition so there should be another word and "people with Asperger" is sometimes too long for a lazy girl.

According to the new DSM, it's autistic. I just tend to use that.

Both are stupid nicknames. Oh well it's not like anyone ever calls me an aspie. it's usually jerk, pig or as*hole. Jerk and as*hole I think have a better ring to them.

Yeah, every time I see the word "Aspie" I get pissed off. Giving a cutesy nickname to your mental disorder is weird and belittling.

Also, it looks like "aspic". Aspic is gross.

I hate it too. For one thing it has that sharp hiss (Assspie) to it and secondly, I agree with other people in that it sounds too cute, and to me is what a soccer mom would say.

Yes, I hate shortened words, abbreviations and acronyms (you may notice in my posts I almost never use them). Typically I say 'person with Asperger Syndrome', which is nevertheless a bit of a mouthful when you are just having a quick chat.
