Have any of you heard of a card, like a business card, that is provided by a psychological professional that indicates that the holder of the card has Aspergers? It is intended to explain unusual actions in certain social situations. My AS son wants one. Here's why:

He recently had a car accident on his way home from work. The other driver got out of his car and became somewhat aggressive toward my son. When this happened, my son began to stim strongly and started toward a panic attack. Luckily, my son called me on his cell phone and I was able to get to the scene pretty quickly; however, he did have a panic attack, right there in the median, and I did have to explain that he has Aspergers. The other driver and cop were beginning to think he was on drugs (well, assuming Luvox doesn't count). Had I not been able to get to the scene, I'm not sure WHAT would have happened. A card that explained his condition would have helped greatly.

Do any of you have a card like this? How does my son get one?

Here is a free printable one: http://www.homeschoolmo.com/2010/10/fre ... -card.html

If you search "Aspergers Medical Alert Card" you can find more options.

Thank you!

And I just found the thread from May 2010 on this subject, so I'm set.

It reminds me of a car accident I was guilty (really very small damage) last week.
It's the kind of situation I already know I'll probably look scared for the other ones, so I get out of the car and tried to look as normal and calm as I could.
During the conversation about the small damage the guy threatened me a bit (I'd pay the damage anyway - but he didn't know), but instead of feeling scared I remembered how people get scared and usually overreact when THEY are frightened, then I got a little calmer.
I hope it helps.

I have a medical ID bracelet for that sort of thing....but it would probably be good to have a card or something to hand someone if he is not injured or so upset that he doesnt think of it.

I actually just designed a card to carry in my wallet saying that i have asperger's and giving some info about it,and how to hand me in emergency situations. I can't figure out how to post it, so i'll just tell you what it looks like:

It has 4 rectangles, but the two on the left only take up about 1/4 or 1/3 of the width of the card (it's the size of a business card), and the top squares are shorter.

In the top left is the medical alert symbol, and in the top right are the words, Asperger's Syndrome, written with the colors of the autism ribbon (one for each letter), underwhich it says, An Autism Spectrum Disorder in black.

In the bottom right rectangle (the largest one), it gives some info:
Autistic Tendencies:
-May Avoid Eye Contact
-Unusual Behavior
-Heightened Senses- May be especially frightened
by loud noise, touch, etc.
-May Have Meltdowns in Fearful Situations
-Has Trouble With Social Situations

Do's and Don'ts:
-Do not attack/grab
-Do not yell
-Do stay calm
-Do give me space to recover from meltdown

In the bottom left rectangle I have the autism awareness ribbon underwhich it says:
I'm not trying
to get
attention, I
have autism.
And each line of the sentence is a different one of the colors on the ribbon, while the word "autism" has a different color for every letter.

Sorry, that may be confusing, but i tried! It looks really nice! Good luck to you all!

I would like one of these for situations where my globus syndrome means I am struggling to talk.

I did some googling.

You can edit the text to whatever you want.

Looks good!

Anyone heard of this website before?

No, and I really don't think it would do much good.

Here is the thing about car accidents. They shake most people up, and anger others. In most situations, the angry party will still proceed to follow the proper information exchange protocol despite angry behavior, and the angry behavior usually won't turn into physical violence.

In these situations your son should just focus on getting the proper information exchanged.

If he does feel threatened though, he should just proceed to call the police.

It's generally not a good idea to do anything to imply that you have a disability that inhibits your ability to respond properly in these situations. He could be judged unfit to drive based on people's limited understanding of AS and lose his licence.

I think telling the cop he has ASD might help. At least that way the cop wouldn't think he was on drugs.
I think telling the other person involved in the accident could backfire. It really depends on what kind of person the other driver is. Could be someone sympathetic, or could be a goon who will exploit the information.

My card arrived from ucardit. I'm really pleased with it.

Apart from anything else, it will serve as photo ID. I do not hold a driver's license, and object to carting my passport around everywhere with me.
