People knowing about Aspergers

So I was doing some hw in the Chemistry library at my school for this class. Some other students that were in the class were there talking bad things about the professor whos horrible by the way. Apparently the students were hypothesizing that my professor had Aspergers syndrome. And I was just in shock for a moment, I was like, "what the hell?" The general consensus that ive gotten from people: most NTs dont know about Aspergers syndrome. So I was shocked. I asked them a little about why they thought this. Personally I dont think my prof has Aspergers and Im always on the lookout for other aspies. He never crossed my mind once. So I was wondering, maybe im underestimating the amount of people that actually do know about Aspergers. To me this is a bit scary because people will most likely view aspies in a negative light. Im afraid Aspergers will become an infamous condition just like ADD. What I remember in elementary/middle school, kids would start randomly accusing each other of having ADD. I was hoping Aspergers doesnt become like this if it hasnt already. While its good for more NTs to be aware of Aspergers, I feel this would only be beneficial in a positive sense, that yes we do exist and we are simply wired differently. Not so much in a negative sense like: we have Aspergers and were freaks.
