My monitor up and died yesterday, so today I rushed out to try to either fix it or replace it. I was told it's usually not worth the cost to repair, so I let the guy talk me into a new one. It is a 20 inch Hanns G HZ201. My old one was 19 inches and was actually 2 inches taller. So I'm a little upset that this new one actually looks smaller. I set the resolution to 1280 x 768. I guess that means less scrolling left to right, but more up and down. Am I wrong to feel buyer's remorse over what was a very hasty purchase? Should I just try to get used to it?

You can always return it and make a more educated decision now that you have time to think. Which may be harder if you dont already have five monitors on your desk...

The newer monitors need a beefy GPU to drive them, integrated Intel graphics ain't gonna cut the mustard. You need at the very least a lower-end ATI Radeon or NVidia GeForce onboard or discrete graphics system. The reason why I say this that the newer LCDs have a higher native resolution or are considered tuner-less HDTVs at 1920x1080 or 1280x720 and Intel GMAs will choke above 720p or 1280x800 resoultions.

I vote for this.

Odds are (from what you say) you went from a standard monitor (square-ish) to a "widescreen." The aspect ratio for these vary, and if you're happy with the vertical height of a monitor, you need to make sure the widescreen will be tall enough to meet your standards.

I get annoyed at widescreen specs because 22" diagonal isn't always the same from model to model. You got to measure the height (at the very least) to have a concept of if you'll like it.

I am leaning toward exchanging for something similar to what I had. It was squarish and worked very well for me. Spoke to the store and they are checking into what's available.

I think I would have come to this conclusion if I'd taken my time, as I usually do, with a decision like this. I tried to make a snap decision because the prospect of losing my computer access, even for a day or two, was surprisingly frightening. It wasn't so long ago this would be no big deal, but the computer has become my lifeline for many things, such as socialization. It is difficult to admit I've become one of "those people," as I used to think of them.

That Hanns-G is probably an HD 1080i/p display. If your graphics card has DVI-D or HDMI connectivity - HDCP is optional but needed for Blu-Ray playback and it can drive a display at those resolutions, try setting your video mode to 1280x720/1280x800/1440x900/1920x1080. I have an LG Flatron 20" widescreen that I think is set at 1440x900, but it's capable of 720p as well.

I have an Asus graphics card with an NVidia GeForce 9600GSO 512MB driving the display.

I am curious as to why the widescreens are so popular. I'm seeing one for the first time and I just don't get it. Is there some benefit I'm not aware of?

1. More "real estate." Once I got used to wide screen, I can't stand regular. Easier to tile two windows side by side and look at.

2. More games are coming out in wide screen formats, so regular screens compromise how much you get to see.

That makes sense. I don't game, though, and it's never occurred to me to view two windows. I guess I'm in the minority. It's like if they started printing books in landscape instead of portrait.

I finally exchanged my monitor today for a Viewsonic 22" VX2250wm-LED. The size is much better. I've gotten used to the widescreen but I needed it to be taller.

Now on to my gripes with the new one. Why does the top of my screen look noticeably dimmer than the middle and the bottom? Maybe it's my imagination, it just looks that way. Overall, the brightness and the colors seem more dull than the one I just exchanged. I picked this model because it looked brighter than all the others in the store!

I still have the resolution at 1280 x 768. They recommend 1920 x 1080. Why would anyone go that tiny? I would need a microscope.

Sorry if these are dumb questions  -- eventually I'll just adjust -- I got quite used to the one I returned.

If I'm not mistaken, Windows has a DPI adjuster that makes everything bigger without having to change the resolution and making things lower resolution + blurry.

It's in the display settings if you're using Windows Vista/7 I believe. XP has it somewhere else.

Yes, I can change it from 96 to 120 DPI, but it's still too small at 1920 x 1080. Not too blurry where I have it.

Any responses on the dim colors at the top of the screen? It's driving me nuts.

Tune/calibrate the display - if you have an ATI or NVidia card you can use the screen optimization wizard to do this.

I have the brightness up as far as it will go, and I bumped the contrast up a bit. Color is set to 7500 K. It also has auto-adjust. I don't know what kind of card I have.

in my experience hanns g is just a bad monitor company....

they are a cheap brand but on paper they look good- you get a lot of features for what you pay for but you often get dead pixels, bulbs that break, or areas lacking in color/brightness which could be a defect on your monitor.

http://www.newegg.com/

is my favorite place to buy any PC related parts..they sell the square monitors like your old one.

most movies are coming out in widescreen is another reason they switched to widescreen, just like tv's...

I am personally looking at this monitor.....50,000,000:1 contrast ratio...sounds crazy to me.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824160056

also you can look up reviews of monitors on youtube...just type the model and brand name into the search- a lot of different companies do reviews.

(Sorry wrote this and missed the post about buying a new viewsonic- have never had viewsonic monitor so not much comment there....)

It's a little out of subject, but isn't a 1440x900 be able of 900p? I was also under the impression that all computer monitor had progressive scan. (For not strain the eye, as we need stable picture for reading well.)
